Default Rusty Leonard 2/06/05 - 11/16/11

It is with great sadness that I tell you Rusty is gone. The past few days he has been declining. This morning he managed to get up and hobble outside but fell while doing so. He then laid on the grass to rest for a few minutes. His breathing was very heavy and labored. After a few minutes we encourage him to come inside. He again managed to do so but fell again. When he made it to his bed, he was really out of breath and continued that way for awhile. Both Dave & I knew this was no longer fair to him. Dr. Hunter came out to the house at 3:00 today with my favorite Vet Tech, Karen. We all gathered in a circle on his bed and talked to him. Dr. agreed it was time. Stickers was in that circle and when Rusty was drifting off to sleep she was sniffing his breath. After Dr. left with Rusty, she wanted her dinner. So, I hope she will be okay.
I am numb right now. I truly feel like my child has died. I know he is no longer in pain but it still hurts so bad. I am so grateful that I was Rusty's Mom. He was an incredible dog. Funny, loving and oh so sweet. I am proud to say I was his Mom. I will love him always.

Yeah it definitely feels like you've lost a child when your beloved pet dies...especially a dog. We become so close to them - raising them, teaching them, nurturing them, loving them. You are so, so right. As grateful as you are for being Rusty's mom, I am sure Rusty was grateful to have you in his life too.

I am so sorry he is gone. Very sorry. But, you did the right thing by him and you know that. The pain will ease and you'll learn to handle it and put it in its appropriate place (it never goes away, I am convinced). Happy memories take over, as I always say. Do what Flash's momma does (I believe it's Flash's mom, forgive me if I am mistaken): Kiss Stickers twice - once for Stickers and once for Rusty.

To you Rusty, we are happy that we got to know you here and we all will miss you. Run free and play with all the other hounds that have left us. Know that you are very loved by many, even though you are gone - you live on in our hearts (especially your momma's).

Much love and peace to you all.

-Michelle

We are so sorry....you are correct, they are our four legged children....I laid in be last night and held Woody and just cried, letting him know how much I love him and praying for the Lord to just protect his entire being.....as I loved him I know that I feel his love return....

I know that Rusty felt the love you have for him as you had felt what you meant to him....let that be your peace....you will see him again.....and the pain of his loss will be filled with the love and laughter you shared with him

God bless you and yours at this time,
Prayers of peace to you,
Kristi

I'm so sorry Patti. He was much too young to go. You're in my thoughts today.

I'm heartbroken. I always thought Rusty was so beautiful, and I loved seeing the videos of him playing with his relatives. Honestly, when you posted that he was sick, I didn't believe it. So I was very, very sad to read your post. That beautiful boy had such a wonderful life. It's such a shame that it was cut short. I am so sorry for your loss.

We've lost so many great hounds in the last couple of years. Rusty is in great company. But I wish he was still here.
