Default Bassets should be worked

Bassets like any other dog need loads of exercise, and I think they miss out a lot on exercise because they do not do fetch. You cannot stand in a park throwing a ball to exercise a Basset. You need to get your boots on chasing them around open country.

My two really can motor when out sniffing (working) and I find this one of the stimulants for my hounds.

Most basset will chase but not retrieve. that is what the were bred to do chase. There are a rare few and usually in those case they have been highly rewarded for returning. I have had one or two that will retrive in the house but not outside. Which speaks to reward factor the reward for retrieving in the house is for play to continue but the inside of the house is less interesting and distracting. Outside the reward of another toss of toy is not powerful enough vs the other activities.

I find most base enjoy a good came of chase but because of there breeding prefer to do the chasing rather than being chased so sometimes it can be difficult getting a game going even with multiple dogs unless you are the one being chased. Tug is another good energy burner but nothing beats a good hunt and chase of bunnies.

There is nothing in this world that my girls love more than chasing... They would prefer to be chasing small critters, but most of the time any chase will do! They just love chasing! I love watching them chase too, especially other people's reaction to their chase.

Millie plays fetch, but like Mikey said, it depends on the environment. Outside, she will chase the ball, and bring it back 50% of the time. Inside, Millie always brings it back, and usually is the one who bring the ball/toy to me to start a game of fetch.

When I mow, Lightning, who is now officially an old man at 13.75 years old, will chase my tractor back and forth, back and forth, the entire time I'm mowing. I'm amazed at his stamina. I should mow more often. And he used to fetch, but his eyesight isn't so good anymore.

There should be no need for gym membership if you own a Basset or 2

Finally figured it out-Flash is a defective basset LOL. He loves fetch-brings toys to me both inside and outside and wants me to throw them. And he loves being chased-by me, the kids, etc. Well he is only 7 months old, so maybe he will grow out of all that, who knows. He is such a silly dog

i will fetch inside the house, but ONLY for treats.

Meloves to CHASE CHASE CHASE!! (not be chased)

I "kind of" retrieve outside-- in the sense that i'm chasing my retriever pals who are retrieving balls. so the ball gets thrown, the retrievers run, and I run after them as they run back & forth. that's kinda like retrieving, in a basset sense
