Default Vaccine questions

Hi Everyone,

Can't remember what the consensus was about vaccines--

I'm now couple months past my 1st birthday, and am apparently due for DHP, Bordatella, and Rabies. my daycare's very strict-- actually wants Bordatella every 6 months! tho my vet allows me to be okay for 1 year. anyone have opinions on this, and how frequently i REALLY need these?

Again, they are:
DHP
Bordatella
Rabies

Thanks! Worm

rabies every sstate in the union now regognises the three year vaccine but it must bis only good for three year if adminstered before the three years is up and after the first boster. At one year of age wworm need the bosster and then would be good for every 3.

Bordatella is not a core vaccine. I do not get it on any of my dogs again it is a bacterial vaccine so it is not likely to last a year. And bordatella is only one of a miriad of bacteria and virus that can cause kennal cough so how effective it is is in real question and it really is not a life threatening illness. I understand why kennel require it because any infectious agent can wipe out there business for a considerable length of time. So if you are going to day care boarding etc you have to live with those rules.

DHP again general recommend a booster at 1 year of age then every three years some recommend titers to confirm immunity rather than vaccinate but the tires general cost more but there is no chance of adverse reaction

UC Davis VMTH Canine and Feline Vaccination Guidelines (Revised 11/09
Quote:
Canine Non-Core Vaccines
Non-core vaccines are optional vaccines that should be considered in light of the exposure risk of the animal, ie. based on geographic distribution and the lifestyle of the pet. Several of the diseases involved are often self-limiting or respond readily to treatment. Vaccines considered as non-core vaccines are canine parainfluenza virus (CPiV), canine influenza virus, distemper-measles combination vaccine, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Leptospira spp., and Borrelia burgdorferi. Vaccination with these vaccines is generally less effective in protecting against disease than vaccination with the core vaccines.
Canine Parainfluenza Virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica
These are both agents associated with kennel cough in dogs. For Bordetella bronchiseptica, intranasal vaccination with live avirulent bacteria is recommended for dogs expected to board, be shown, or to enter a kennel situation within 6 months of the time of vaccination. We currently stock the intranasal vaccine containing both B. bronchiseptica and CPiV. For puppies and previously unvaccinated dogs, only one dose of this vaccine is required (recommendations differ for the parenteral, killed form of this vaccine). Most boarding kennels require that this vaccine be given within 6 months of boarding; the vaccine should be administered at least one week prior to the anticipated boarding date for maximum effect.

I agree with Mikey.

As I understand it, the bordatella is one which does have a short period of effectiveness and six months is about the limit, but I also do not give it to my dogs at all since I'm not concerned about it and I don't board them.
