Hello, my name is Ashley and I am fairly new to this forum. ![]() I am a new owner to Layla, a female 40-pounder Basset Hound mix, and she is a wonderful dog. However, my husband and I really need your help to find appropriate no-pull harness. We really like harness very similar to Gentle Leader or Premier brand because you can clamp the leash in the front instead of on the back. Unfortunately, neither brands fit Layla very well because she has barrel-chest yet narrow back/body. So we are wondering if any of you basset hound owners have recommendations for us to try with Layla? Many thanks! |

Hi Ashley and Layla. We like the ASPCA stop pull harness as the leg straps can be adjusted to any size dog. Someone else on here also uses it. It has a firm bar across the chest and works really well for us plus Henry cant slip it which was a problem we had with others.

There are two different harnesses referred to as a "Gentle Leader". There is a head collar (no need to go across chest) and a harness that pulls from the front...the last one is actually called an Easy Walk (made by the same people I think). I'm using a Gentle Leader Deluxe on my basset hound. All the other harnesses I tried to use didn't properly adjust to his chest.
This is the actual Gentle Leader: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3493/...f6f60a2ccb.jpg It goes around the nose and around the back of the ears. It has eliminated 95% of Copper's tugging. He had gotten really out of hand and wasn't focusing in training classes or at home, so my trainer suggested the Gentle Leader. We got the Deluxe version because it has extra nose padding. Because it is a HEAD collar, I don't need to worry about it fitting his chest. I love it. |

non of the front clip harnesses are very secure For a dog that is intent on pulling will be out of it vbery quickly. For a little power steering in teaching a basset to walk on a loose lead I recommend a tradional sporn no pull halter the has straps that go under the arm ptis and when the leash tightes pull/pinches this area more effect for most basset than anything that pinches the neck and far safer for puppies as well. THere are a umber of makers of simillar products. I do not use the sherpa pads
n Sporn Halter
