I have had Otis now for about 3 months. He is almost a solid red color, with only a little white on his chest (but barely any at all). I keep reading that this is pretty rare. Is that true? I picked him out because I've never seen a basset a solid color like that!
Also, Otis had a TERRIBLE reaction to his last set of shots he received. His face swelled up so bad that one of his eyes were swollen shut and he had hives all over his body. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this before? Luckily we were able to speak to someone that knew what to do for him (and luckily we had the right things at home to help him, since it was extremely late at night and we had nowhere to take him). But all in all we've really enjoyed having him! I've never met another dog with such a personality!!! He's definitely another member of our family now! He even has part of the couch claimed to prove it!

Welcome! Many years ago Lightning had a similar reaction to a vaccination. He was throwing up and his face was swelling and incredibly itchy. Luckily, I had just returned from the vet's, and they were only a few blocks from my house. So I was able to get Lightning back there immediately. If I hadn't, I honestly don't know if he would have survived. Since then, he has never had a bad reaction to any shots. But just to make sure, I stayed at the vet's for 15 minutes or so in case he did. I hope Otis never goes through that again either.

Anabelle is also solid red with a bit of white on the chest. It is fairly rare but I think it's the best coloring. He will probably look a lot like her in about 10 years :P

A solid red is not rare in the sense that more money should be charged for them.I had solid reds many years ago in a couple of my litters. But,you may not see alot of solid colors like that, which makes them a little more unusual. There is one vacc my Vet holds back on till the puppies are older and I'm not sure which one that is ,possibly Lepto(short version)because it causes more reactions in puppies than the others but who knows why he had the reaction. You should have another set coming in about a month stay at the Vet's place at least 20 min after the shots are given in case he has another reaction.

Welcome! Otis is beautiful! A local rescue also has a all red Basset Hound currently... I think they are gorgeous! Its almost like a true miniature Bloodhound! I wonder how often you will be asked if he is a miniature Bloodhound! LOL!
Poor little guy! I'm so sorry to hear about his reactions! It happens from time to time! Hopefully, for his next one, he will be better! I agree with everyone else, stick around the vets office for about 20 minutes or so. In fact, if the vet knows about the prior reaction and doesn't insist you stick around, I would find a new vet!

What a cutie he is. Those vaccine reactions are scarey! Daisy had one reaction (her face and feet were so swollen) and our vet also has recommended the next one we hang out for awhile to be certain she does ok. She even mentioned that we could premedicate her with some Benadryl if we'd like. We will definitely be cautious next time around.

Thank you all so much! I think Otis is a pretty handsome young man, too!
![]() We got his final set of shots done last night. My sister is a vet tech and made sure to pre-medicate with Benadryl 24 hours before she gave him the shots. She also gave him a shot of benadryl about 15 minutes prior and we've been giving him Benadryl every 4 hours since. It turns out it was the lepto vaccine! The hip he got it in is pretty swollen but we've been able to keep the swelling localized. Thank goodness! I can't imagine him having such a bad reaction again! And he was so itchy and miserable

What a handsome fella! My Jake had a reaction with his shots. Now we just split them up. It is worth the extra $15 tech fee opposed to the cost of the emergency vet.
His snout swelled like crazy. On one hand it scared the hell out of me (my poor baby) on the other hand, he did look kinda cute. Anyway, the ER vet gave him an Epi shot, then we had to give him benedryl. I don't recall all of the shot, but the one that gave him trouble was the one they give if they will be in contact with any wildlife (we live in the country and have lots of deer, etc. going thru the yard) |
