Howdy! I haven't been on here in a while- not because I don't love our basset friends, just been busy!
It occurred to me the other day while driving with Fergus that I would be destroyed if I got into an accident and Fergus got hurt because I didn't have a seat belt on him (plus, he was trying to sit on my lap and I thought a seat belt might keep him in his seat better). I wouldn't think twice about buckling a kid in, why should I not buckle my four-legged baby? Anyone got a recommendation? The last thread on this was incredibly inconclusive and the only recommendation was a tube thingy, which we're not going to do. I thought this one looked good: Kurgo Auto Zip Line with True-Fit Smart Harness & Wander Leash | Wayfair Any thoughts? Anyone have a size recommendation? Thanks for your help friends! |

I went with Easy Rider car harness. I mostly use it for controling Norman. It confines him to one set and out of my lap. However, It was the only padded vest. We got the medium sized harness, but Norman is only 40lbs. He is small for a basset. This type of harness does double duty on arrival--clip leash to ring provided for walking dog.

We use a Paisleys regular harness with a bamboo leash with a seat belt attachment on it. It clips into our regular seatbelt clip and gives enouch slack to enable her to lay down or sit up. ( I mentioned bamboo just because I remember seeing it as the only one that does this -- we purchased it at the vets). We had a car harness before this but Paisley outgrew it and we haven''t been able to find a replacement quite the same yet.
We are pretty lucky -- we just got back from a 12 hr car trip and Pais mostly just stretches out and chills -- not a peep out of her. We have to keep checking the back seat to make sure we still have a passenger. Oh yes, at one point she scratched at the door to tell us she had to pee. |

Hi Fergus,
Nice to see ya back here! Wanted to give you some thoughts-- actually the zipline idea looks pretty kewl. lots of mobility. someone suggested that for our campsite when i went camping w/the peeps. I have a padded vest seatbelt harness, like these. The seatbelt goes through a loop in the back. I still use them, esp when we travel long distances. The Petco/Petsmart page won't paste here properly, so here's a website. 4th picture down, and has a blurb. it's basically a harness. the seatbelt part is the same as what the peeples do with it. http://petbehavior.org/?page_id=17 but, i have to tell on my person. she sometimes got lazy and didn't buckle me up! bad person!! anyway, my Auntie M gave me this kewl device. called something like a "Universal Seat Belt Adapter" or something. it's not too 'pensive. i wear a harness all the time anyway. so it's very easy. one end is always in the seat belt lock. the other end, they clip me in & clip me on. takes 2 seconds or less. so now i'm always finally buckled up. I don't know where Auntie M got it, but it's something like this: good luck & be safe! --Worm
