Default Basset hero of novel

I'm a novelist working on my second book in a five book series.
In the first book In the first book
, I introduced Albert, the basset hound owned by the main character. Albert is in the book for a good chunk of the time, and at one point, he comes rushing to his owner's aid and saves his life.

I've been stunned by the response I've gotten from readers on this. I own a basset (also named Albert), and so I'm very familiar with how attached people get. (Honestly, I think Albert is the one who actually runs my house; he's just sweet enough to let me hang around.) But my readers all keep commenting on how much they loved Albert in the book.

As such, I'm folding more of him into the second book. I just thought it was interesting that even a fictional basset hound can be so influential on people.

I'll be prowling around this forum, looking for inspiration for how to continue to create a canine character that keeps drawing readers in. If anyone has any stories or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I think my favorite stories of any of my bassets was Ozzie. He was the most laid back basset I've ever had except when he was introduced to this new neighbor. He went ballistic. It was all I could do to keep him from biting the man. This was a dog who would play with grasshoppers without harming them, and rarely barked. I was stunned. A couple of weeks later I found out the man had just gotten out of jail, and was a registered pedophile and sexual predator. Ozzie knew he was a bad guy from the get go.

Always trust the animals....they can pick up on alot of things we can't...it's really amazing. I'm forever paying attention to what they are trying to tell me. Most of the time I don't get it until it has happened....had a mama cat who moved her litter away from a water pump in back room...she was fine there for several days. Couldn't figure out why until 12 hours later, pump shorted out and caught on fire...
