Default Update re: older basset

I thought I would let ya'll know how Mr. Peabody & I are coping since he can no longer climb the steps from his lot (where he uses the bathroom). I tried "puppy pads" but due to his build Mr. Pea would put his front legs on the pad but the urine would hit the floor & run under the pad. I looked at the "pee patches" but they were too small for a basset. I'm using human size "chucks"-like puppy pads & he has got the hang of it now. There are some days he evidently just holds it & others where there are some misses but all in all it's going well. I just wanted basset parents to know where there's a will there's a way. Mr. Peabody just finished a round of antibiotics for pneumonia & is back to his old self! When I took him to his regular vet-in a panic because his breathing was not right the Vet Trainee (or whatever) listened to his chest & said it sounds ok to me. I told her I SLEEP with him & his breathing is not normal. So 2 x-rays later she shows me the cloudy looking lungs & says "Well thank heavens for mother's intuition!" Hopefully he'll have a long healthy spell now. Thanks for listening.

Thanks Annie & Esther!
Did I see Esther swimming in a pool? She's a beautiful girl. Mr. Pea had to be rescued from a creek with less than 2 inches of water in it!
Annie also seems to like water seeing how she's at the beach-another beautiful girl. They sure bring a lot of joy. Some of my friends say now Mr. Pea's name suits him-LOL

Puppy pads can be hard to use because they are square and bassets are rectangles. I often tape two together.

Glad Mr. Pea is doing better. Yay for the old hounds! I love hearing their stories

And yes, mommas DO know best. I knew Molly had more going on than a bellyache before her Addison's diagnosis. My vet even said that it was my intuition and the fact that I am so in-tune with her that kept her from suffering a severe crisis. Always follow your gut!

I remember what you mean about not making it on the pad, its been a while since I went through it-i remember taking a large black garbage bag and putting junk bath towels double folded on it, I did a wash every day of all of them and she used them fine and theextra laundry meant nothing!

I use the bed pads for incontinent adults. The are just huge piddle pads and you can get a great big box of them from Sams/cosco for real cheap compared to the piddle pads. they are large enough for a basset, however, there are still misses. I think when Abby see's the white under her feet just assumes the back end is on it too!
