I'm always amazed at people's reactions when I take Lucy and Millie out and about.
Children are the funniest! Without a doubt some child will say, "Hey! Its a Hush Puppy!" My favorite though, was a little boy, maybe around 6 years old, who yelled, "OH MY GOSH! That's the biggest wiener dog I've ever seen!!!" Its always humorous too, the amount of people who call them Beagles or Bloodhounds. ![]() The amount of misconceptions are humorous too! I take my girls to our local dog park. When we walk in, those who don't know us, are always amazed that Lucy and Millie run around with the rest of the dogs. They are shocked they aren't lazy. Personally, I've never known a lazy Basset. If it interests them, they are far from lazy. Yes, my Bassets can generally keep up with your Lab and if my Bassets are in the middle of a chase, they will generally find a way to get to whatever it is first! People are so amazed at how fast they are, and I usually have to chuckle and say, well they were bred for hunting rabbits. I think the funniest was when we were at a Halloween Party this weekend. One of the ladies, asked me about my dogs, and was shocked they weighed so much. I had to remind her they were big dogs, just on short legs. Then she said, "Well, because the legs are so short, that means they can't get on your furniture. I may have to get one then. I hate my dogs on my furniture." No worries! I informed her that my dogs had claimed my sofa and my recliner for themselves and yes, they do get on the bed themselves. She didn't seem too eager after that... Oh! One more thing... Don't think you can hide all of those treats in your pocket while at the dog park. You may fool all of the other dogs, but my Bassets will not only know you have treats, but can tell you which pocket they are in and how much you have. If they didn't have good manners, they could probably get them out of your pocket too! ![]() Has anyone else had a funny experience with non-Basset people?

I have the same experience almost everyone I run into has ever seen a basset puppy. They are so uncommon in this are. With all the beaches everywhere people for some reaso all want labs we are overrun byt them. I have met alot of hound owners but not bassets I am one of 4 in my town.

We get told all the time, "Oh, look at that cute beagle!" And, of course, the usual lazy and dumb remarks.
Oh yes, and we have heard the wiener dog remark, too. I know of at least 3 or 4 other bassets in our town.

Oh yes, to all of that! After a while, I just stopped correcting them.
Molly was called a Corgi once...a Corgi?!

Just about every visit to the park gets some crazy comment. I recently got a lecture from a woman at the park about how odd it was that Annie drooled soo much, since, in her opinion, they aren't big droolers. I tried to explain to her that yes, bassets do drool but it fell on deaf ears. She insisted that it is great danes that are the droolers. I suspect that her elevator doesn't go all the way up, if you know what I mean.

I have gotten to when I just ignore some things too, like "Wow, your dog can actually run."
I hate the "Bassets are dumb" comments though. For some reason, they really get under my skin. I really shouldn't let it bother me, but I think its just the ignorance of it. I like the fact I have "free thinkers." LOL! "Bassets don't drool!"

I get "ooooh thats a big sausage dog" alot, and occasionally "oooh what a long beagle" *rolls eyes*. It does my box in sometimes.
I also hear people laughing "ho ho ho what huge ears" we got that alot when we were on holiday, after about the 100th time of someone saying this my friend turned to me and said "actually you could get really insulted, I mean you dont have a look in someones pram and then point and say ha ha ha look at the size of its ears do you?!" I must say I found this funny. |

In the shelter, people often have to get warned about how strong bassets can be. A lot of new volunteers assume that because of their short stature, they can't pull very hard on the leash.
