Our family (my boyfriend and I) adopted a 2 year old basset 3 months ago. We are very happy with such a great addition to our household. Monroe came house trained and is just the sweetest dog ever!
The only trouble we have is his obsession with food or what he thinks is food! We feed him twice a day with the recommended amount and treat him after good jobs with a few treats. In fact at parties he misses out on his dry food just for a chance to snatch something of the buffet. Or on the weekends when we sleep in, he has no urge to eat. He enjoys family time. So I don't think he is that hungry. He goes after everything! Besides real food, he goes after pencils, wood chips, paper, ashes etc. He is good with shoes and other things... Does anyone have an idea how we can make Monroe's and our life easier? Thank you

all basset are obessed with food as most scent hound on theory I like is it is genetic. When breeding for hunting perescistence the full button got left behing. Let's put it the way to hound after eating breakfeast go out hunt. which is going to be the more persitent hunter the one that is still hungry or the one that is full. ?
no lets turn to chewing non food item I don not thing it is related to hunger. Ches is a great distraction for dog is a good outlet for them provided they are chewing on appropirate object. which is not the case with monroe You name a few things Monroe Chew pnecils, wood chips, paper ashes, and a few he does not shoes. See a common thread in what he chews? It is my belief that individule dogs have a terxture preference for what they chew and it can even be a breed prefference as well as it seem a very large number of basset have have a preference for wood. ie paper, wood, pencils so hiw many appropriate chew toy does he hav e that are made out of wood, my quess is none. I susggest igving him wood block. ball etc he can chew instead of what you do not want him to. Any time he is chewing something inapropriate trade it for what you want him to chew and reward him for doing so. The important thing is to reward him as well when you find chew on an appropirate object as well or what the dog learns is to chew on a inappropriate object first. some find natural chew work well or thing like stuffed kong toys etc. Mine seem to like cow hoves and they all tended to be wood chewer some more than others keep in mind there is no such thing as a safe chew or chew toy and you need to suppervise the dog at least at first to ascess the risk of that particular top with your dog. |
