Hi all,
After reading a few of the threads on here about the naughty things that Bassets do, I've realised my Bagel bitch Bella is no different, and I don't feel so alone anymore. I can't believe how hard it is to not give in to the big brown eyes, that give such a sad look through the baby gate, when she know's she's going to be left for a couple of hours, then worrying about how loud she will howl while I'm out, but then get home and she's just getting out of bed yawning and stretching. She's a year old, resembles a Basset more than a Beagle, though she does have the annoying Beagle tendency of stealing and hiding, not sure if Bassets do this though. She digs the garden, digs the sofa's, digs the carpet. She howls, she's noisy, she wins all the arguments, but she really does an impressive sit, down, stay, wait, heel, if there's a piece of cheese in my hand. The "Bella Come" command still requires work. She's a crafty little so and so, and extremely manipulating but if she still can't get her own way she resolves to brute force. I didn't think such short legs had such spring in them and have spilt many a cuppa because of suddenly finding my pooch on my lap with no warning. Her good points are: she's loving and snuggly and loyal, the loyal part only when there's no other smells to investigate , or any other dogs passing so she can sniff their rears , she doesn't have a bad streak and is so gentle, unless it's playtime then she loves to play with her flat critter thing, and will not let go. But it is hers. I'm loving this forum and finding it so informative, I've had border collies before going into Bagle slavedom so it's been a bit of a shock to the system, any info I can get is a big plus.

![]() I'm trying to convince OH we need a hound pack, but he says we have to get Bella totally housetrained first, we're about 95% there, but if it's raining outside it's a battle of wills, Bella usually being the winner. Honestly that pup has no shame!! |

Welcome to the basset world. I have a basset and a beagle..they really are at opposite ends of the scale. The beagle is eager for anything...the basset is compelled to sit and think things over before any action. One so laid back and the other never thinking before doing anything. I would think a beagle/basset mix would be very interesting. Would love to hear ongoing stories. Enjoy...

My mommy is new to the Basset world to. I am three months old now and have stolen my mommy and my big brother Baxter (black lab) hearts! My mommy doesn't understand why I'm not getting the "outside potty" thing as easy as Baxter did. But she's really patient with me, especially when I say I'm sorry with big wet kisses!
![]() Does anyone have any tricks to make ear cleaning any easier? I absolutely HATE when my mommy tries to clean my ears. We both very wet and it just takes forever! |
