Smile Inside voice!

How do i teach Henry to have an inside voice! Of late whenever we say shhhh he just barks louder! This is generally at very clse quarters to ones ear when sitting on the sofa and Henry seems to be just talking for the sake of having something to say! We have tried rewarding quiet basset whispering but it would seem that yelling at the top of ones voice is just more fun!
Any help please let me have it before i either buy ear plugs or go deaf!Thankyou
Victoria and Henry

If you find a solution to basset barking, market it and retire.

Barney would bark in my dogs face for like a 1/2 hour would drive me crazy. I filled a squirt bottle with water think I sprayed him a total of three times he has not done it since as a matter of fact it worked wonders for my obnoxious chihuahua and daschund. If they start barking uncontrollable I just show them the bottle and they stop. Of course a little barking is fine but I live in a quiet neighborhood people don't just their doghs bark endlessly.

don/t think you can teach a dog to bark softly but if you can the only approach would be free shapping the only problem with this is the dog is not likely to understand barking softly vs barking so you will in the end get more barking, though it may be softer, I think a better approach is rearding the dog for not barking in the first place. Secondly is to try and figure out why the dog barks and work on the emotional state that causes it for instance if he barks for attention you can teach a different incaompatable behavior to get you attention like sitting quietly. the problem most people have with attention seeking behaviors is they simply ignore the less anoying behavior and leave the dog no choice but to be annoying.

The only time Flash really barks is when we leave the house-and he is freaking loud! Barking over and over. If we go outside without him, then he does this whiny howling thing. I am glad that most of my neighbors don't seem to notice his barking (and I am pretty sure it doesn't last long, I can be gone only 10 minutes and he isn't barking when I pull up outside anymore).

Hector never used to bark very much, that is until about 2 weeks ago, now whenever he has been out no matter where, or for how long, upon his return he starts barking and being generally very excited for about 10 mins. I'm not sure if it's the change in season but the devil is certainly in him at the moment.
