Default Trying to figure out their color

The man I got the pups from said they were lemon, but lemon is a light buff. I know some basset owners call them lemon if they aren't dark or tricolored. I'm pretty sure Bella is red, but Claira is a darker buff, and no red. It's hard to tell. What do you all think? Bella has the purple collar and zig zag back, and Claira has the red collar and spot on her back.

I say red and white. They don't look lemon to me. But they are adorable! I love the zig zag back! Too cool!

I would say red and white too unless Claira is going to fade into a lemon in later life - Humphrey was this dark until he hit about 2 then become a lemon and white pretty much overnight! Either way they are both little cuties!

the line between red and white and lemon and white is arbitrary and in the eye of the beholder. typical naming normancleature for basset on has three bicolor coat yellow&white, red and white and mahogany and white keeinp in mind the vast majority a mahoganies are actual tri's with either black and red on a single hair or the black haires are randomly dispersed amonst the brown/red giving the appearace of a darker uniforme shade of red/borwn but that is not normally the case.

Tris are black tan white hardly ever refered to a black red and white though the tan/red color is often the same

a true lemon and white has the dilution of the red coat color the actual color on the hair shaft is ligher. in al dogs I have seen that light as the get odler and it is very common in bicolors is iether to to increqsed ticking that is more white hairs becoming disperesed in the red/brown pataches or early greying that is the red/brow hairs turning grey

Really, the color name depends on the person. Some people call any pup that is born almost white a "lemon", although they can end up a fairly rich red. To me a true "lemon" would be very pale even when an adult. It's complicated further by the fact that the shade of the coat changes as the dog ages, with senior dogs sometimes fading back to nearly white again.

To me those to would both be red & whites.

I think, like Esther, Anabelle is a good example of red. As a comparison.

My definition of a mahogany is that they are born with black hairs. Usually you can still see black hairs around the face and mingled with the red when they are grown. "Reds" like mine have no black hairs at all ever. Well, except for Vina who has a "beauty mark" on her tail - but that's a "glitch", like yellow labs who have patches of black.
