Default What a great day!

First, today, Mom gave us left over pancakes! We love pancakes! Then, we napped inside in the sun till Mom came home!

Mom took us out on a long walk and out to a field with a lake in it. We chased a rabbit. Then, we chased squirrels. Finally, we chased the geese and ducks back into the water!

After all that chasing, we sniffed around. We sniffed and sniffed! Then, we started rolling in all kinds of smells! Oh, the glorious smells! I don't know why Mom started yelling at us, but the smells were to amazing not to roll in!

Finally, Lucy and I started chasing each other! We ran and played for so long. When we finally got home, Lucy and I weren't done playing! Mom was so excited when Lucy picked up a toy and started playing with it. Mom says Lucy hasn't played with toys since she was rescued from the bad man a year or so ago.

So, the only bad part of today is now I have to share my toys with Lucy. I've never had to share before and I'm not sure I like it. OH! Mom gave me a bath, and all those wonderful smells are gone now...

Mikey! That sounds like lots of fun! I think we can convince Mom to take us... Do you know what we have to do to be allowed to participate?

Lucy is much better at it than I am! I just follow her around. Lucy has brought home five rabbits this summer. Mom and I were pretty grossed out, but Lucy enjoys sniffing them out.

Next time we are out, I will make sure Mom has the camera! Defiantly try the pancakes... If you can, get your human to drizzle a little of the sticky stuff over it... I think it makes it taste better...

You need to show up before 7:00, 6:30 would be a good time to fill out paperwork and basical you two need to look like full blooded basset not necesserily conformation specimens or anything like that but not obvious mixes and third is you need to be under fifteen inches at the withers ie shoulder blades, though I have never seen a basset actual measured at an event it is possible. Cost are as follow 10 to register each dog a one time fee you can do this day of the show or go onto the AHba website forum section and down load the registration from and take two photo of each dog one from the front and one from the side and mail it to the address on the form with a 10.OO for each dog to register the dog before the trial but it is not necessary. most people register the dogs at a hunt.
The human must as register with the AHBA the year membership is 10 per calander year starting january to december, however their is also single day membership which makes more sense in your case because this is the last hunt of the year . The cost of a single day membership which covers libility insurance is one dollar each day. The cost to enter the trial varries Ususally there is only a bench show on saturday which increases entry by 5 dollar entries fee varries typical from 10-20 per dog with the indiana hunts typical are on the low end of the scales i would guess 15 for sat and 10 for sunday. Breakfast and lunch are served for those that want it with soft drinks and coffee available as well for a minimal fee some times a donatation other wise between 3-7 dollars each

Novice class is referred to as open. that is what they would conpete in. You can put them in the bench show as well. that is a conformation show, the cost of which is included in the entry fee so you are pay for entry to the bench if they participate or not.

as far as the field goes after all entries are in at 7:OO there is the casting this can be a bit confusing because cast/casting referes to two sepreate thing 1. cast is the group of dogs drawn to hunt together, casting is also the act of drawing dog to hunt together. So in this case casting is referrering to the drawing of dogs. THe cast(group of dogs hunting together is (3-6 dogs) which are drawn randomly. Generally the dog is assigned a number and a bingo roller is used to draw dogs one cast is filled then the next so on down the line. The owner of multiple dogs has the right "roll" a second dog out of a cast in which on of its other is runing, ie not having his dogs compete against each other. The reason i mention this is because. Typical novice dogs and for that part most basset even not novices unless specifical trained will not hunt or work for stranger if you are not out ther with them they will come looking for you rather than with the cast. At a hunt depending on the number of dog often there are multiple casts, groups of dogs, out at the same time hunting at different areas. You will want to find out how the cast are going to be divded and sent out. If for example their are two cast of novice dogs and they will go out at the same time you may want to keep the two together if draw together , but if you know the two open cast will be out at two different time you may wish to seperate them. Theoretically any dog not actively hunting for any 15 minute time frame can be disqualified however unless the dog is being a neusence this just does not happen and even less so with new people to the sport. the dog are given a minumium of I hour in the field . The winners of each cast then will go out again to determine the winner of the class. in class with less six dogs or less only a single cast is need to determine a winner. there are three classes open, champion and grand champion. Spectator are alway welcome so if your dogs are not out on a cast you can watch the other casts or stay warm at the club house.
Most beagle clubs on the east coast are completely enclosed this is general not the case in the midwest however the hunting style basset is to stick around with the humans the wandering off following their nose does not happen unless they are actively chasing.

After the hunt is over many club often allow the use of the ground by the dogs but that is completely and individual thing. Some clubs looking for member some time allow acess to the starting pen. Which is much smaller area which makes find and chasing of rabbit by a novice dog easer get them the idea of what they are suppose to do. again what is and is not allowed is very individualistic if you contact kevin he can let you know and if it is something after see and participating you are interested in persue he can be helpful in getting you started in training etc,

As far as what is expect of the humans knowing keven and the others judging style, it is basical unleash the dogs when told at the start say behind the judge and out of his way and leashing the dog up at the end of the hunt. I have had people in the past ask if they should be spectaors first because they are unsure what to do, If you can attach aand un attach a leash to a collar you got all the skill necessary to handle a dog at a field trial. Basical the dogs are left to do the rest on their own.

I have linked to it before but this video is form the 2008 AHBA world Hunt held at a club in michigan terrain and cover is basical the same they tell me never been to either.

The rules and procedure I explained here can be found on the AHBA website If you have any question on the rules you can ask them here or on the AHBA forum boards as well

Boomer! You get the pancakes too! Do you get the sticky stuff? I love the sticky stuff. Mom doesn't give me a lot of it though.

Esther, you defiantly need to work on your Daddy! Let him know that pancakes aren't just for humans.

Poor Worm! We will get you some pancakes!
