Question Hypersalivation, even for a basset - Help!

I know Basset drool, trust me it covers most of my home and nice shoes! In the middle of last night Monty started to drool excessively, not normal Basset drool but very watery drool, almost like a leaky tap. His chest, legs, ears etc are all covered and he soaked three beds in a couple of hours. We are currently chasing him around with a towel to try and kee him a bit drier. I rushed him to the vet this morning but they weren't much help, antibiotic/anti inflammatory and sent home none the wiser. He's fine apart from the drool but it's so excessive I'm scared there's something really wrong

has anyone else had this?

He looks so sad

Did he eat something? Mushrooms?

Is he acting different in any other manner?

Is his potty normal?

saw this in a kid who swallowed a coin that ended up in windpipe...
she was salivating a lot & looking uncomfortable. she was ok and they just removed it. it was identified on x-ray.

Yeah, like L&M says, is he eating & pottying ok? and is he breathing normally?

Hi Guys

thanks for the quick replies!

Monty's eating/exercisng/potty are all normal, the only thing that's changed is the drool. I'm running out of towels. I don't think he's eaten mushrooms or anything as we were just in the normal park which is pretty free from anything bad. Someone suggested weedkiller. His nose is streaming as well and his eyes are wet.

had this happen to a cat not a baset where the drooling was so excessive they gave sub q fluids to prevent dehydration.
the conclusion reach is it was caused by lick/biting a toad.

the hypersalivation ended in a little over 24 hours from the toad lick/biting

Oh yes, absolutely, weed killer, insecticides can do it, too.

Also found this site:
Welcome to Web DVM: The Web's Best Source For Canine/Feline Advice And Health Information - Organophosphate Toxicity

Could Monty have been exposed to one of the above at the park? Maybe they used something that's causing the reaction? or like in the website?

He doesn't sound super sick which is good, but surprised the vet didn't want to find out more. Did the vet rule out organophosphate poisoning for sure? because if it is this, can be treated with Atropine.

there was another incident of this on the forum and the dog ended up having a piece of a stick caught on the roof of the mouth cough between his teeth. This type of obstruction should be pretty obvious for a vet so after a vist not the likely cause.

I was going to suggest maybe something is stuck in her teeth. But hopefully the vet would've seen that. Good luck and hope you figure it out.

I have no idea if its the same with dogs but if the horses go and eat clover they drool, none the worse for wear and it wears of after a few hours but it looks terrible! And the cats drool if they have been and chewed on a toad! Hopefully you have done neither!

Had one eat a toad once and it was like a fire hydrant in his mouth. Gandy drools like that when he gets in the car because of anxiety.
