Folks,
This is one of my most fav wet foods! It's called Wingaling, by Merrick. Do you remember when I was looking for wet food with no ground meats? well, here is one, that is at least partly so. It has an entire chicken wing in every can! yum yum. haha, Barney, whatta funny story about a person eating it. Can totally see a person doing that. But i actually did have a question. It says on the can & the link below that it is OK to eat the chicken bones. What do peeples think of that? so far, my person hasn't allowed me to have any. she takes the bones out. but if i can convince folks here to vouch for me, maybe she will let me have them. for the record, i would like to eat them... ![]() Merrick Pet Foods - Pet Foods --Worm

LOL...I bought that one for Annie once. The bone freaked me out so I investigated it...it was super brittle and didn't splinter like a normal bone would...so I gave it to Annie. She got sick that night. Was it related? I have no idea...But I haven't ever purchased it again because of that incident. I'm not saying it's bad at all...just maybe didn't agree with Annie, or she got her snout into something else when I wasn't looking (which is probably what happened).
FWIW, and I know I've mentioned it before, but for the sake of saying...another canned dog food that is actual meat (not ground up or disguised as little slices of formed yuck) is the Tiki Dog line of foods. If you buy the Ahi Tuna or the Wild Salmon...you can actually see that it is real fish, and real egg bits and real kale. I'm partial to feeding Annie fish since it's good for her brains, joints and skin But she also gets a healthy dose of bison, lamb and duck as well lol.

Bones raw or not do cause intestinal blockages and puncture so there is a legitimate concern eating bones. FDA reccommendation that bones other than ground bones should not be fed to dogs. that said the risk is likely very small. It is hare to but a really number on the number of bones eaten by dogs to corrolate with the injuries and create a realistic risk factor. but keep in mind every chew toy ever made has cause simmilar problems as well
It is a risk I personnally would advoid when possible but whether that is a rational judgement no one knows , You can go to the Raw diet thread for related dangers of bones and raw meat. Any company that will say eating the bone is safe is taking a huge liability risk The aproblem is the courst do not place a value on dogs that the owners do so acutal that liability risk is not as great as one might think. |

thanks, basset pals!
k, the jury is still out-- well, the company says they cook the bones for a really long time, so they are soft & not splintery. which is true, we can mush them with a fork or spoon.... Annie, thanks for the links to Tiki dog food. looks like yum! can we buy it at pet stores mewonders? it looks like island or Hawaiian dogfood or something... mmm.... have ya tried it, and do ya likes it? --Worm

I would say not just a no butt a big NO –
They said that what Flash had was puss pockets throughout her fighting off a foreign object – the only thing we could think of that she got into was last spring she got a baby bunny in our back yard that we didn’t know about. She had the fur on her paws and some blood. We never knew how many she got to since we didn’t know about them in the first place. All Dr. Allan could say was its probable that it could have been a bone that cause all it. Since they never found the object this is all we had to go on. That said – even before our nightmare – I never gave any of mine bones. To me it’s just too dangerous. Good luck in your search though – I’ll watch for what you end up with as I’m not sure what Mabel’s final diet will be. Jen~ |

Wormie...Annie LOVES the Tiki dog foods! Well...ok, she just plain loves food, let's be real. We haven't seen it at places like PetCo or Petsmart though we get it at a smaller store called Pet Supply. If you have a small, non-chain pet food store near you they'd be more likely to carry it.

The bone in that is very soft and would be fine. My dogs have been on and off a raw meaty bones diet for years ad there has never been an issue. Weight bearing bones on larger animals is a problem when they talk about blackages, broken teeth etc. Marrow bones and such are also a problem.

Raw chcken bones are known to casue blockages and puncture as well it may be rare but it does happen.
Testimonies [quote] From Gail, Willow Run Siberians, Leavenworth, WA I got the pathology report yesterday afternoon from the vet. Kenai died as the result of puncture wounds. The pyloric valve (betw stomach and intes.) was basically ripped apart, like a "foreign body" had been stuck there. Other things looked highly irregular too--pancreas, etc. it was from the ONE chicken back I gave him. ONE Raw Meat and Bone Diets for Dogs: It’s Enough to Make You BARF Quote:

Ok ,I know of a well known schnauser(can't spell that one) breeder who feeds all raw diet like whole chickens and the idea behind that was if the chicken is uncooked bones don't splinter but if cooked it can splinter. Don't know Once as a kid we had one of those that got chicken bones out of the trash they splintered and we had to put her down, long time ago.I usually don't give mine anything but a huge beef bone occasionally.
