Default New! and Questions!!

First off, HI!! I'm new here. I have a 5 month old (well in 6 days) basset hound named August. He's your average lazy, stubborn, adorable basset. He loves to lay on my chest (probably going to regret starting that when he gets really big). He just started to loose his "baby teeth". It scared me so bad when he lost the first one. I've never had a puppy that lost his teeth (that I was aware of). He was playing tug of war with a friend and it just came out. There was a little blood but it stopped after a second. The next day he lost another, so I've been on tooth patrol ever since.

I have a couple of questions.

1)Since we've moved from my parents house I've been letting him sleep with me, which means he become un-crate trained. He whines/barks/whimpers the whole time he's in it. Any advice on how to re-crate/kennel train him?

2)He has some sores near his privates. I've mentioned it to the vet, the first time she just said it was puppy acne and would get better on its own. The second time she prescribed antibiotics (it had gotten way worse). That cleared it up, but now its back worse than ever! He didn't mess with it before, but now he is constantly messing with it. I plan to take him to the vet sometime next week or the week after, I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I'm going to try to attach some pictures but I'm new at this so I hope they show up.

Sorry for such a long post! Thanks for reading!

Charlotte has something that looks similar (although its kind of hard to tell because the pics aren't quite clear). She has been super itchy but after flea treatment and a medicated bath didn't work and she was still itching/biting little sores on her tummy and legs we went to the vet who now suspects it might be seasonal allergies. Because of all the sores she put Lotte on prednisone (to stop the inflamation and histamines) and cephalaxin for the sores. If they clear up her issues she might try her on a daily allergy medication as well. She had been miserable for 2 weeks but after 2 1/2 days on her new meds she is comfortable again.

The itchy stuff might be a staph infection or it might be seasonal allergies. Rosco has the same thing but only during summer months. The crate training part, I suggest putting him into his crate and give him a treat right away. You have to build him back up to sitting in there quietly and understanding he is getting rewarded not punished.

Cute pup!

Don't know what the boo-boos might be, but glad you're having a vet take a look.

Love the name and he looks like a handsome young man Welcome!

cephalaxin is what the vet put him on last time, it cleared it up great and started working fast. she told me that if we didn't do anything about it, it could turn to staph. i've noticed that his eyes have been really red throughout the day. they used to only get red around bed time so i thought it was because he was tired. hopefully it's just allergies.

annie i think you are the only person who has said they like his name. haha every usually tries to get me to change it to something else.

he is soooo cute!!!
the rash....is it a rash? or is it like, little pimples? are they water filled, or actually like a pimple and pus filled? if it's water filled, that's an allergic reaction, or else a type of psorisis. Is he around grass? does he drag his butt in it? a nice sponge bath after grass might make a difference, i used to get little water blisters from grass when i was a kid.
if it's pus filled, it could be a kind of skin acne, which i also recommend sponge bath every day in the area, with anti-bacterial soap...or does he have little hairs growing in? maybe he's chewing his hairs off and they grow back as ingrown hairs! that's kind of unlikely over such a big area...but i'm just throwing it out there.

try to look up dog rash, or red bumps, or itchy red bumps or differet variations online before going to the vet. If the vet hasn't seen something like that before, they may just throw out expensive treatments you may not need.

Is he on any meds, or vitamins? it could be allergic reaction to his food. You could try a really high quality food without fillers or additives. ...and without wheat or corn gluten!

my beagle has terrible stomach and bowel issues...until i started feeding her holistic select brand food...she's had a 100% turn around! anyway, it's worth a try!

its more of a rash with scabs on it? i've been taking him on walks through grass but it started way before that. i've tried to look it up but i never knew what to search for. he isn't on any regular meds, he's had a heart worm preventative once a month but it started before that too. he's been eating Purina puppy chow since before i got him, so maybe its that?
