Default New Puppy Questions

yesterday was Belle's first day with her new family. We are enjoying all the things that come with puppy expecially bassets.

When it was bed time we have one of those sound machines that make noises. Belle seemed to like the crickets. I checked on her several times and she was sleeping

I know and realize that she is away from what she has known all of her
young life and cries. We try to distract her with her toys, but I am curious
how long this will last ? It just tugs at my heart when she whines. We rub those great basset ears and assure her everything will be all right.

Any ideas would be appreciated and how long the tranisition will last ?

Welcome beautiful Belle and you sound like a wonderful caring dad.....
I got Woody Hayes when he was 7 wks old (I now know too young). He cried a few times that first night....even when eating, he would set with his face in the bowl and whimper btw bites.....after a few days though he seemed to settle in.....I realized that first week (it was near christmas) that I wore my warm bathrobe alot when I caught him crying at it when it was hung up....I think he thought I was in it and would pick him up....he still will cuddle on that robe if I happen to toss it on the bed......and he is 8 months old...

I am sure you will recieve lots of wonderful advise from this sight...these people are the best...

Good luck to you and Belle and here's to many happy days.

We are two weeks in now with our new family member, Maggie. Though she is six months old she is still stressed from the transition of homes. She whines a LOT. The good thing for us is that at least part of the time it is because she needs to go potty. But the other times, well... we are trying to learn her cues but it is frustrating. Some will say you should give her attention before she asks for it by whining and that may be true. But it doesn't help if she is crying WHILE you are loving on her and reassuring her.
I like the sound machine idea. Also you may want to forfeit an old teeshirt that smells like you for her bed.
I know it is troubling but hang in there and congrats on your new furbaby!

Never had a pup, my guy came at 18months. He walked into the house, lay on the couch and wanted a pet. Never heard a cry out of him, although we have another dog and I think that may have been the reason.

Molly did the same thing when she first came home. She missed her littermates and wandered around crying and looking for them. It lasted a couple of days, then she settled in. One thing that helped her was I gave her a t-shirt that I had worn to sleep in and she cuddled with that when I wasn't with her.

It does break your heart when they cry like that. I think the crying question was my very first post on this forum. Rest easy knowing that Belle is doing something most puppies do and she will get through it. Congratulations on your new addition

The cricket thing is interesting. I wonder if it reminds the puppy of the heartbeats of mommy and brothers and sisters all sleeping together.

Congratulations on your new basset. You didn’t mention where you have her sleep. Is she in the same room as you’re in or another room? My bassets are the first dogs I’ve ever used a crate with for a few reasons – when we got Flash as a puppy and put her in the crate for bedtime – she would also cry – when we moved the crate into the bedroom with us the crying stopped. It appeared she just didn’t want to be alone.

Oh, please add some photos – can’t get enough of puppy photos

Best of luck to you with your new addition and congratulations again!

We found out the same thing with Virga. She would cry all night in her crate until we moved Doppler's crate in to the same room as hers. Then the crying stopped.

I had the opposite with Flash-he would cry and cry if we were in the same room, but if I left the room he would settle down and go to sleep. So strange how different they all react to things sometimes!
