Default How can I tell his age?

Hi everyone, I have not posted in a while, but my newest boy Riley is the light of my life and he keeps me very busy. I am hoping with so much wisdom on this forum someone can help me on my little journey to find his age. I adopted Riley through St Francis in Central Florida. He was thrown over the fence at St Francis and was taken to a vet who put him up for adoption and through a friend I adopted him! I love him so much!! When he was thrown over the fence he was attacked by some chickens so I feed him chicken now. (I think its good karma!) lol.

Here is what I know for sure. He had a micro chip and it was never activated. The chip was purchased in what the Home Again folks called a "lot" on 4/4/2005. The chip was bought by a breeder in Nebraska and he was shipped to a pet store in florida and then ultimately thrown over the fence. I adopted him 9/17/2010. There is no way that he is 6 years old. My guess is maybe 2-3 yrs old. He is smart, well behaved, the sweetest temperment, healthy, extremely social with people and other dogs. He was chipped and neutered. He has a scar on his chest from what looks like he outgrew his collar and they never loosened it but it is fully healed and the scar looks old. Awful.
Here are my questions-

Do breeders hold on to these chips for long periods of time before they are put in the dogs?
Does a dog have to be from a licensed breeder for a petsmart to resell him?
Would he have gotten the chip before he landed at the petsmart or after he got there? (maybe he wasnt born in Nebraska- I just dont know)

Could he be from a puppy mill since he was shipped to a Petsmart in Florida from Nebraska? is that a bad thing since he is so perfect?

Is there any possible way to find his parents to check his lines etc?

I would almost love one of his siblings if I find the breeders.. an help on the process of breeder to store to owner etc would be great. I am wondering if Petsmart would have his chip on file at one of their stores??

Thanks! Bev

I don't know the answer to your questions, but just wanted to say how lucky you both are to have found each other. Some dogs aren't that lucky. I'll never understand how someone can neglect and abuse an animal. Sigh.

Is that Riley in your avatar? That's a good looking pup!

Nice looking fellow. Not sure where I read it but recently read that a vet can tell by the layers in the eye whatever that means. We think it's great that Riley finally has a great home and food slave.

This is a puppymill and everything they do is predicated on minimizing cost if buy chips in quanity miniimizes cost then yes. It would not be unusal to to fin the chip actual bassed many hand being resold and purchased. as well.

that wast the greying thread. If you as look at the howing thread you will find part of the natural aging process that occurs in the eyes is called Nuclear sclerosis the thickening of the lens

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the eye parameters in dogs of different age

We found that parameters of the eye such as the lens

thickness, vitreous thickness and sagital eyeball axis

increased with age (Table 1).

i think i did mention it in the greying thread.
it was austin (atb, rip) who was aged by a specialist here in memphis who has written multiple papers on the subject. will see if more info can be obtained.

I am really clueless about the microchips. I think I read Mikey's post correctly that the chips could be bought in a "lot" and then resold to someone else. Is this another way to save money when breeding? I am sad that he is more than likely from a puppy mill, but he is a good boy and he is loved. I lost Benson at the age of 9 to Cancer just over a year ago and I needed Riley as much as he needed me.

More like make money it would be cheaper to not microchip at all but it is likely they can sell to the pet store for a higher price if chipped and the store uses it a a selling feture with additional mark up as well.
