Default Memorial Day

In honor of those who have served our country and have passed on, a big thank you and salute to you and your families.

From Boomer and family, especially Boomer's big brother Andrew, who is currently serving in the Navy.

Yay, Boomah, thanks for the reminder! You must be proud of your human bro in the Navy.

My human cousin is going to Afghanistan in June for the next 12-18 months. Must be the 3rd or 4th time now. Army. Well, we do just wish he would come home and stay home... maybe next time. When he is stateside, he is in Fort Benning, Georgia. so yes, we think of all the basset people from Georgia a lot. well, i think i will send him an 'arooo' and a thank you. good thing you remind us.

Things are so much different now. I remember when I was a kid, I had three brothers in SE Asia at the same time, one Army, one Navy, and one Air Force. Didn't matter what color staff car went up the street, my mom freaked. It didn't help that we lived half a block from a National Guard armory, so staff cars were a constant. We'd get maybe 1 phone call every 6 months, an a letter every month or son, maybe. When my son was in the Navy in the Middle East, he had email and sometimes cell phone service. If I didn't hear from him for more than a day or two, I freaked. I don't think I slept for that whole 6 months he was over there. I thought he'd be safe as a Navy cook, but he got assigned to a Navy Hospital that supplied personnel for the filed hospitals that the Marines went to. He got combat pay for baking cakes, and I started getting gray hairs.

My son is in Japan, and is also a Culinary Specialist, aka, Navy cook. He has also been in Engineering.

I get so upset when people say "Oh, at least he's safe there". They've had to deal with the N. Koreans and their insane leader, not to mention natural disasters, such as the recent earthquake and tsunami.

It doesn't matter where they are or what they are doing; there is always an element of danger, and they ALL deserve our respect and prayers.

I can't blame my gray hairs on my son; I started going gray in early 20's.

Oh lordy, I meant to say in my early 20's, it sounds like I was around in the 1920's.

When someone said that he was safe because he was a cook, I told them that the first sailor to die on the USS Cole was a female culinary specialist. When he was transferred to a frigate, his battle-station was one of the 50 cal. deck guns. I actually asked if I could write a letter to his Captain asking if he could just stay in the kitchen. My son threatened me. He was such a strong swimmer that he qualified to go on the small boats when they stopped suspected drug boats. He said if I wrote to the Captain, that he'd start going on the boarding parties. Not really fighting fair.
