Hi everyone! I came across this page when I was searching for answers to my basset questions. I have Toby, a ~1.5 year old Basset something mix. He was given away on Craigslist and I saw him and picked up the next morning. He's amazing.
In the pictures you can see his front legs are very very splayed. They don't seem to bother him at all, but sometimes randomly they seem to 'give out' or he trips over them? I'm not sure, I just notice he tumbles forward a little bit. Does anyone have any experience with that kind of behavior? Thanks! |

Good lookin' fella! Looks like he's got some lab possibly as well as basset. We've got a basset mix as well. He's (we're guessing here) a basset/redbone/golden retriever mix. One day we're going to get the doggy DNA kits and send it off to find out for sure. He was touted as a basset/beagle mix but when I saw him I knew that was wrong. Plus the lady we got him from said he wouldn't get any bigger. That was 40 pounds ago.
The only thing that hints at basset on Doppler is his slightly bowed legs, his long body, and dense bone structure. He's tall like Toby is too.

We were told Basset/Dachshund but at 50 lbs we're not convinced. BUT i bought the dna test yesterday so in a few weeks we'll know! I'll let you know if its worth it. He's not too tall he doesn't make it past my knees, so hes not the fastest runner but he does try to keep up with the other dogs!
![]() Can anyone's basset swim? Or is their body just not made for that? |

the two before me could for a brief moment but were panicky about it when they couldn't find their way to the steps. there are several on here who have great shots of their hounds swimming! |

I dont have any advice about the legs. But wanted to say how handsome he is! I think that must be the best craigslist find EVER. He looks very sweet. And I would be very interested in the doggie dna test. how cool!

Doggie DNA tests are useless. It will come back about 9 breeds with a few more being a higher percentage. All todays purebreds were made of other breeds who were made of yet more breeds and then refined into the breeds we know today, so the tests reflect that heritage.

The turning out of the feet is general referred to as being fiddled fronted it is a severe conformational fault, but you will see a very high percentage of pet quality basset with this trait which atests to the difficultly in breedign and maintaining a proper front. That said it rarely causes a problem. \
For mine that was prone to stumbling as one of the straigher legged dogs it was more an issue with the shoulder but even then it was not a long term problem as aerthritis or causing pain. |
