A Health Question re: Bassets

Someone at the dog park mentioned to me that my new Basset will have to have his anal glands "squeezed" occasionally. What does this mean and what does it involve, and how often can I look forward to having to do this?

I never had one that had to have that done. I guess the vet could have done it when I wasn't paying attention, but I suspect I would have noticed that.

I guess in that respect I've been lucky with Beldin... he hasn't had any issues with his anal glands *knock on wood*

Lucky here too. Bernie is my 3rd basset and i've had several other dogs too and have never had to have that done. Thank goodness!! lol Hopefully Bernie will follow suit.

Annie would always have her anal glands expressed when she went to the doggie spa. I have only seen her scoot once in the past few years and I gave her some pumpkin puree and she doesn't seem to have any further issues in the hind end anymore

I'm of the view that if they're not causing a problem, it's best to leave them alone. It's extremely rare that one of my dogs needs their glands done.

I think it is very easy to damage them by manual expressing them and once that happen the only way the get empty again is by manual expressing So I think you can do more harm than good by expressing them where there is no indication of a problem.

The most common sign is scooting but contrarry to some opinion not all scooting meand a dog needs anal glands expressed. Ihave had dogs that would scoot to wipe themself soft/stool, piece stuck etc. This occurs right after going so of the dog only scoots after it defficates it is unlikely that it need its anal glands expressed. Now if it is doing so at random times during the day. on the carpet etc.. it is highly likely the anal gands need to be expressed.
