As some of you may remember Chuck (aka my little landscape helper) likes to dig in the dirt, like most bassets. Yesterday we got our grass seed down so we decided that we would walk Chuck and his side-kick Chumlee in the front yard for the time being. (our back yard is fenced)
I grabbed the leash and Chuck started crying like someone was beating him, slipped out of his collar and cried some more. Repeat of the same this morning. Fun times! (note to self pick up a harness as mentioned earlier posts and spend more time getting him used to walking on a leash) Today I took a break from work and scoured the stores (and Craigslist)looking for a gate that will contain the two dogs in an area that the grass seed isn't. After an exhausting several hours and finding that most stores do not have them in stock right now or they didn't have the right size I found one at Toys 'R Us...and they price matched Wal Mart! One store said we should get some in soon, check back tomorrow (obviously she doesn't have a basset hound). My response "my dog's need the gate TODAY!" She looked at me and said "I understand", which I really don't think she did. (big sigh of relief) Now I can go home... |

Poor poor Chuck! Mean ol' momma won't let him go in the backyard.
But I don't think the grass seed will be helped by relocation at the paws of a basset hound. The gate sounds like a good idea. Since Chuck loves his freedom so much lol!

Poor Chuck. What he doesn't understand yet is soon his backyard will be full of tasty grass which he can repay momma's "meanness" by puking all over the clean kitchen or at least that's what my dogs would do.

He hates the gate about as much as being walked in the front yard! The gated area is 6' x 50' - plenty of room. After about an hour of being in that area last night with all of his toys, being fed supper and big bucket of water he managed to tunnel out underneath (side kick jumped over).
Hoping this grass grows soon so they can have free run again! I'm sure the two of them will leave me lots of nice "surprises" from snacking on it! |

patience, young lad! your mommy needs a break.
you will have an all-you-can eat buffet in your back yard before you know it! ps. would love to see pick of Chuck enjoying the new backyard when it's done... : ) Last edited by Wworm; 04-20-2011 at 03:55 PM. |

more than brattyness it may be that the collar chokes him. I notice bowser has no problem putting on one style of harness, but when i reach for the over the head one, he won't come to me, backs away, and gets generally upset! which is silly because it fits him better. But anyway, my two cents. i would take him into the store and try on an over the head, and a basket harness. I don't think that's what it's called, but it's the one where the paws go in at once and it latches around the shoulders. : )

I looked into getting one when I got the Sporn harness.Annie goes crazy about anything going over her head as well, sometimes sounds like I'm ripping her arms off or something.

It may be a money pit but it's YOUR money pit! And I love the third picture of Chuck with your son (?) I assume. Bassets are great receivers for hugs.
