Default Hello Everyone

Hi everyone. I have been lurking for awhile and haven't gotten around to making an introduction until now. I adopted a bi-color Basset Hound from the humane society in February after losing my Golden Retriever Lab mix, my best friend for 16 years. We renamed him to Jaxson since he didn't know the name the humane society gave him. They said he was a stray and didn't have much information on him. He's estimated to be about two years old. Someone has spent a lot of time with him, he will sit, shake, down, and stay. He'll even do them all without treats! In March I adopted a 12 week old German Shepherd puppy. It was probably too soon, but has been the best thing that I could have done. They have been best of friends since day one. Beau has helped Jaxson so much with his separation problems. They do an excellent job of wearing each other out as well. They are both more than ready to go to sleep at night! Of course they both get their daily walks, the rough housing sure doesn't hurt .

Just curious, does anyone else have any problems with their bassets' getting sunburned? Jaxson loves to lay out in the sun on his back. He's been burned a few times already. It doesn't seem to bother him, just turns his skin pink. I thought it was a food allergy until I realized what he was doing.

Thanks for reading,
Crystal

Congratulations on your new babies! Jaxon is a fine looking dog, and I love his name.

From the sounds of it, the boys will friends for life, they seem to have gotten off on the right foot.

Sunburn can be a problem, there was a recent thread about it.

Welcome to the forums; you'll find lots of good information and new friends here!

He is boooooootiful! My basset now ATB loved her sunbaking too. Every day in fact - but she seemed to have an inner radar as to when she had been there long enough and would always come inside after. There has to be a skin allergy sensitive sunscreen on the market for dogs. I know regualr sunscreen literally brings out my daughters exceme so I'd do some research first.

Congratulations and welcome....Jaxson is a very handsome dog and both boys look so happy together...I know that I read in a past forum thread that they do make a canine sunscreen.....I would check on this since you don't want any issues with his sunburnt belly...and it's hard to keep them from enjoying the warming rays...I know my Woody will lay in the sun coming thru our back patio door...since we haven't yet had very much warm weather.....

This group is a very caring and warm bunch with great advice on just about every topic...

Welcome aboard.

Love the picture of the pups laying together! It's cool to see that someone else also has the strange combination of dogs as we do! We also have a GSD! We get some funny comments when walking the boys together.
I do watch how much time Yogi spends in the sun because I worry about him getting sunburn as well.

Your pups are SOOOOOOOOO cute!!! I'm glad they got along from the get go. Having two dogs is so much more fun than just one. We got our second pup to give our first one someone to play rough with. They get along so well and tire each other out. Congratulations and welcome to the forum! You'll find lots of answers to any questions you might have here. The people are fantastic when you need any advice.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and warm welcome . I'll check into getting some sunscreen for Jaxson. He certainly loves his baking time .

Yogi's Mom, that's so cool! I thought I was the only one with such and odd combination of pups. What color is your GSD, a black and tan? Mine is a liver sable. He'll be six months old this Friday. I'm so glad they hit it off so well. I was worried about how well they'd get along. I hope things don't change when Beau matures. Here's a better picture of Beau. His color changes almost day to day:

Having a buddy for Jaxson has made a world of difference. Now that I've started working full time, I don't feel guilty about having to leave him home. I have a nice secure fenced in area in the backyard. On days when the weather is nice, I let them both out before work. They are some tired pups at the end of the day.

Thank you again everyone!

Crystal

Thanks for adopting him. Always makes me wonder how someone could lose a dog like that and not make the effort to find them. Anabelle was a stray too, but the signs say someone wanted to get rid of her, which is even more unbelievable.

Angry

I agree that it is unthinkable how people can just feel that animals are "disposable". To me when I made that commitment to have them, it is like my children and I have an obligation to give them the best possible life I can.....some of these rescue stories just make me so angry.

But, thank God for people like you two for adopting these lovable guys (and Gals) and give them a good home....in situations like these I feel the blessings go both ways...

Best of luck and welcome again
