Unhappy Boomer's short-term friendship

When we got Boomer, we had 2 cats, both over 10 years old. One a male, Dusty, black, fluffy and a total sweetheart. The other, Penny, female, calico and Miss Attitude.

Of course it was an adjustment for the cats to have a dog in the house, but they all came to an understanding.

This fall, my Dusty was diagnosed at 12 years of age with Lymphoma after a lump on his nose didn't go away and was biopsied. The last week of his life he failed rapidly, and I had to have him put to sleep on the last day of 2010, just 2 days ago.
My heart has broken into a million pieces over the loss of my beloved cat.

Boomer knew something was wrong, I was crying and the kitty wasn't around. He would walk around to Dusty's sleeping spots and look for him. He would circle back and forth. He looks at me like, "Mom, where is the kitty?" Even at his young age, he KNOWS and that has been a comfort to me.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Dusty certainly was a beautiful kitty. It's hard to lose a cat or a dog (or any pet, for that matter). When we lost our cockapoo last summer, our one cat stayed by my side. It is definitely a great comfort.

Bassets seem to have a bit more awareness than your average pet. And those soulful eyes seem to say "I get it. I understand." Remember the happy times with Dusty and feel free to share them with us. Sometimes that helps

So sorry to hear about your loss. Dusty sounds like he was a wonderful kitty.

Default cat misses bassett

Am so sorry to hear about your beloved cat. After I needed to make the heart breaking decision of helping my basset to go to the other side, my cat for weeks and weeks constantly looked for the basset in all the 'spots'. My cat tolerated my basset - I wouldn't say they were close but even to this day if I have the basset's special blanket out my cat will choose this place and this place only to do the 'kneading' cats do.

It is good you still have your other animals around to comfort you during this sad time of loss for you and them also. Hopefully you all be of support to each other.

Thank you for the kind words and condolences.

One night, I swore my Dusty was in bed with me; maybe in a way, he was. He used to sleep with me, and purr me to sleep.

I know everyone thinks that their pet is unique, but for a cat, Dusty truly was. Not a mean bone in his body; a lover, not a fighter.

When it rains, it pours... found our gerbil, Norbert, had died today. His buddy, Daggett died about 2 months ago. They were cute little guys, and the only rodents that I really liked.

Have an almost 14 yo cat, and Boomer left.

I wish pets lived longer.

They do know. Thank goodness you have Boomer to help support you through your loss and grief of Duthy - won't be easy but he will help you to get there.
God bless Dutsy. and R.I.P.

What a beautiful cat. So sorry about your loss, it is so upsetting when we lose one of our family like that. Much sympathy to you.
