Tomorrow is my husbands birthday and he's decided he wants a Boxer puppy. A friend of a friend of a friend had a litter and he's picking the 8 wk old pup up tomorrow. I'm happy about having a friend for Flash, but a little sad that I won't be getting another Basset. This will be our 3rd dog and all that we can comfortably afford. So we will have:

Oscar - yellow lab - 10 yrs old
Flash - basset - just shy of 2 years
to be named - boxer - 8 weeks old.

Anyone know anything about Boxer's? Flash has been great around every dog he's met so I'm not worried about him at all. I'm sure he'll love the companionship as the lab really isn't that playful anymore.

I don't really know a whole lot about boxers but Ella LOVES boxers...seriously that is her favorite dog! She could care less about other bassets but boxers she really likes. She hasn't ever met a boxer she didn't love and play really well with! I actually even get excited anytime a boxer comes to the dog park when we are there because I know Ella will then have someone to play with

All the boxers I've met have been super friendly and really good dogs. I happen to like boxers and if I was to stray away from a basset I have to say a boxer would be in my top choices!

Good luck with the pup, boxer pup and a basset playing together might be cute overload so watch out!

Boxers do alot with their front legs. They come at you to play like a rearing horse. Our daughter just got one. You find out they got the name Boxer quickly.

I grew up with a boxer. They are energetic, smart, and mischievous, but wonderful. Boxers are notorious for eating things they're not supposed to. Ours ate an entire glass bowl. Their name comes from their fighting style where they tend to get up on their hind legs (or at least that's what I've heard) and true to the name they jump a lot if not corrected early. At full size they can knock down a kid so it's important to correct that early on.

Boxers love to run and play. Ours kept up with us until he got arthritis at age 10 or so which eventually led to us having to put him down when he could no longer lay down or get back up. That dog is the best friend I ever had though. We got him at 6 months when I was 5 or 6 years old and he lived until I was a teenager so I grew up with him literally.

He was the most loyal dog I've ever had. I was walking him once with a friend when I was about 11 years old and a stray dog tried to attack me and he defended me so that I could run home and get help. He did not move until the dog lunged at me. Honestly he is the reason I am so passionate about dogs as an adult. RIP Basil

Lucy's best friend was Bogart the Boxer. He is a huge brindle boxer. Since she passed away last year, he still looks for her when he comes to the house. They did lots of stuff together and we called them the "odd couple". Bogart is 11. He had a near fatal episode of heart failure in Aug. His Mum and Dad took him to a Cardiac Vet who placed him on medication, is doing better now. Boxer's like basset have average life expectancy of 12 years.

Thanks for the stories and comments. We've been delayed in picking up the pup and are scheduled to get him tonight. I'm looking forward to Flash's reaction when we bring him home. I'm hoping they become great friends. Our senior lab has arthritis and is blind in one eye. Flash tries to get him to play, but he wants no part of it. I'm just glad he's finally going to have a buddy to romp with. I'll let you know how the weekend goes.
