Our breeder Leslie (where we got Lollypop) just had a new litter and posted a few video's of the pups for any of you interested in peeking. Just scroll towards the bottom. Pretty cute stuff.

The thing that bothers me is they brag about their dogs having championship lineage but they don't bother to show at all. Do they do any health testing. Plus com on ... a PAYPAL button? WOW... just WOW.

Lollypop's mother is Lilly and her father is Wilson. I think they are listed on one of the lineage charts, (which are ALL listed if one bothers to look). And yes, Leslie is a very reputable breeder who cares very much about her hounds and her litters. She has all her dogs and puppies vaccinated with all the proper shots and she DOCUMENTS all of it for the purchaser. A large reason we chose her to buy Lollypop from. As for Paypal? It's 2010, get with the program.

We are another waiting list. We want another pup from Lilly, Lollypop's mother, so Lollypop can have a half-sibling! Probably a male next time. All these pups are spoken for, and she typically has a 6 month to a year waiting list. I think she breeds between 4 to 5 litters a year depending on if the pregnancies take. We still have not ruled out adopting though.

My point here is that I don't know of any single reputable breeder who breeds 1- that many litters a year 2- has a paypal button on their website. If she is only producing pets and is not bothering to compete in any sort of venue to prove the breed worthyness of any of her dogs then she is not a reputable breeder. Just because she gives them the shots they are required to have and sends them with papers does not make her reputable.

I recognize, as will some others on this forum, many of the dogs in the pedigrees. She is buying dogs from decent backgrounds so it is ashame she doesn't want to show some of what she breeds. She has gotten puppies/dogs from swedish lines which usually produce large boned puppies. I have made statements of wishing we could see more of that bone in our lines in the US. I think some of those breeders behind some of her dogs would be surprised and disheartened to find any of their breeding dogs went to breeders like her. They didn't keep track of /or require their name to stay on them as co-owners . I know it isn't possible to keep track of absolutely everything but there are some very well known dogs in the pedigrees,National Speciality winners,in fact. The thing is whatever is in the fourth generation on back is not going to have much meaning in her breedings and the dogs in the first and second generation are not superb quality, for the most part, even if they have finished their championship title. Selling puppies on line would probably be the fastest way of doing it but my puppies don't go to just anyone who wants to buy one or has the money in their hands. Having 4-5 litters a year is a money eating operation if you don't get rid of those puppies quick.Having one litter a year is a money eating operation but you can spend more time with what you have instead of trying to get them out the door quickly. The puppies will be more sound emotionally ,will have spend the needed time with the dam and siblings which affects them in many other ways. For me, and I'm not saying I think she is reputable the way we consider reputable breeders to be ,but ,she could be doing worse.

I guess our ideas of "reputable" differ. Why would a breeder have to show dogs to be considered "reputable?" If I bought 2 items of the EXACT make and model, one from Walmart and the other say from Hammacher -Schlemmer, do the items differ in value? Paypal is now ubiquitous and is considered by most to be a normal way of monetary exchange. Should I pay for a basset hound with freshly minted and engraved gold ingots? This breeder is more in the hobby kennel camp. Yes, they do exist. And I think having between 3 to 4 litters a year when you own 8 hounds is not over the top, nor do I think it rules her out as being "reputable". I do know she has a good "reputation" among regular folks like me who love the breed as a pet. I'm assuming of course that "reputable" and "reputation" have similar meanings and connotations. Whether others who have adopted from her have shown their hounds I don't know and couldn't care less. I do know that the breeder takes pride in some of the champion show dog lineage they are descendant from. To wit, her lineage charts on her site. Whether she shows her hounds, I don't know, and couldn't care less. Our hound is a very healthy, happy, smart and beautiful Basset. That is all the "reputable" I need and, I suspect, most other basset owners need too. If I sound prickly I am. My only objective was to simply post video's of cute puppies. To me, all basset puppies are cute. I am an equal opportunity hound lover.
