Potty Problems ARGH

So, Harriet is nearly 10 months old, and we thought, housebroken. The last two mornings, however, the alarm goes off, we (Harriet and whoever drew the short, cold straw that morning) get out of bed to take her out (we don't have a fenced yard, so we have to actually take her out), she has gotten out of bed when we did, and went to the dining room and peed on the rug. We are literally 3 steps behind her. She does it so fast we don't see her do it. Does anyone have advice for me to stop this?

She's had urinary tract infections in the past, so we've had a rocky road to housebreaking, but she's not exhibiting any of the signs of one of those right now.

We clean that rug with enzyme cleaner, would it be a waste of my time to run a spot bot over it?

Frustrated!

Given that she has had UTI's in the past, it might be worthwhile just making sure she is clear of one now. Just my thoughts, as my hounds have taught me that sometimes the accidents in the house are the only noticeable symptom of an infection.

It's just in the mornings though. It's not any other time in the day. When she had the UTI she would go all the time. This is just like me. As soon as I get up I have to go. She is doing the same thing, just faster than I can get her outside.

Thanks Scully, I may decide to have her to the vet if she doesn't stop in a few days, but I'm pretty sure that this is unrelated to the previous UTIs. We, unfortunately were extremely well acquainted with her symptoms. It took 3 months and 4 antibiotics to finally get rid of it.

P.s. Scully, that website is great. The name especially, Harriet is a great mistress of counter cruising.

Well, I don't think it's a uti, when I got home tonight, I took her out, she peed and we came back in and she had her dinner while I washed dishes. Instantly, after dinner, she went into the dining room and took a poo on the rug, bold as anything.

Do you guys think it's the rug?

Oh boy...I hope the poo on the rug was at least solid. LOL

It certainly can't hurt to do an extremely thorough cleaning of the carpet with your enzyme cleaner.

Glad you liked the website! I need to stop being lazy and update it soon. Scully was our original counter cruiser, and is now at the Rainbow Bridge, but our 11-month-old Ninja is proving to be a very skilled counter surfer as well.

run the bot first then enzyme cleaner doing so in the reverse order with suck up the enzyme cleaner making its use useless.

that the problem IMHO basset are much slower at gaining sphinter control than other breeds which leads to much of the problem. Grab the leash put it on her while she is still in bed and head directly outside without stoping.

She just did it again! Was sitting on the couch with me, got up went right to the rug to pee. It has just gotten cold for the first time here. Could it be that she doesn't want to go outside? She's become a heat hog, sitting in front of the heater. If that's it, what do I do?

Could be just as some dog do not like the rain.

1. do not give her the oppurtunity to go in the house. Return to a shedual

2. I think part of the not liking the rain and/or cold have something to do with human atttudes as well. Go out with her in these conditions and make it fun being out their as well as during nicer weather.

3. Confirm there is not a medical issue with the heat seeking like a thyroid issue,

Start as if she were a puppy and take her out ,say every 20 min or so.Adjust the time to fit the need,if 20 min is too long to wait take her out every 10-15 min. Just pretend she has no training at all. When you put her leash on to take her out say something like,"Do you have to go out"? I've always used,"Do you have to go potty"? Yeah, it is a pain in the butt but what choice do you have?
