Default Walkin' with Beau

Cameron and I decided to take advantage of the free, open to the public, natural sagebrush and rock golf course across the street from our house. Not as a golf course, but as a place to walk Beau! We just took our time and wandered around at a Basset's pace, letting Beau sniff around and be a dog. He LOVED it! I know there are rabbits, marmots, quail, all sorts of things out there to sniff after. Then we came home, he had his breakfast, and now he's a sleepy Basset and ready for his first nap of the day.

I did check him over for thorns or seeds embedded in his fur, ears, or paws. I figure if we're going to walk in rough terrain that's my responsibility.

Next time, the beach...see what he thinks of Soap Lake and all the shorebirds that gather there.

So what kinds of place does everyone else take their dogs for sniff-walks? (Sidewalks are for "real" walks LOL)

We have a nature reserve type place about 6 blocks from our house so we go there and walk on the trails. Or there is a pond/lake about 10 min from our house so we go there and walk around the bike trails there and let them walk in the water.

When we are feeling really adventurous we go to a campground area about 20 min away and walk in the trails and lakes there and they have an area with buffalo and elk and stuff so we let them look at the animals too, they love those buffalo!

Both mine are zonked out when we get home. Last time we took them out to the nature center Ringo slept from when we got home (about 3pm) until the next morning, just getting up once to pee!

Woofus goes to doggie park every morning. He's too high energy for just walks. The trainer said he's the 1% of bassets that's ADD So after 2 hours of terrorizing 100 lbs dogs, he's at about normal basset energy. Then he gets to start his walks.

It's been almost a year since I lost my girl. I miss our walks & hikes. We did community nature park, state game lands, local college campus (cause the students loved to greet my girl), stream & creek walking, corn fields........any where there's fresh air!

I am still careful where Nitro goes, but there is an empty few acres at the end of my street. We go there about once a week to smell all the critters - there are rabbits, ground hogs, and deer, as well as the usual Southeastern Michigan creatures, not to mention cats and other dogs.

I am lucky living in an old converted farm steading inthe countryside, surrounded by fields on three sides and on the other side (a two minute drive) is the sea with 18 miles of sandy beaches, rocks and lovely coastal walks, so we go on different routes almost every time we go out and see deer, hares, pheasants etc. For a short 15 minute walk we have a nice lane at the front of our house that overlooks the sea and we get lovely sunsets!
