colitis

good morning everyone! it's been a while since i've posted! just wondering though, does anyone else's basset have a problem with chronic colitis or am i just lucky? toby had colitis a couple months ago, and after antibiotics and all that i thought he was fine. however, he has a problem gaining weight and no matter how much i feed the guy he always looks too skinny. like ribs showing skinny. last night we were up all night again with diarrhea(him not me), and it was bloody just like last time. gotta take him to the vet tonight or in the morning. just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what steps they have taken to keep this under control?

Rupert has had this problem and I need to be careful what he eats.
He now has a fish based Hypoallergenic additive free dry food and is doing well on it.
He was skinny as a youngster but holds his weight well now.

what a good lookin guy! when toby gets diarrhea the vet gave me some FortiFlora which has like probiotics and stuff in it to put in his food. it was a blast giving it to him at 4 this morning. that usual helps get things more solid but it didnt help this morning! and it's kind of embarrassing taking him anywhere because it looks like i don't feed him! anytime we go in public, whether it be to the dog park or petsmart or anywhere, someone has to say something about how skinny he is! i just want my little man to have a healthy weight and a healthy GI system.

I am in the UK so have no experience of US foods but I would try to find something wheat free to try him on.

good thing i just bought a 50lb bag of dog food 2 days ago...haha

Yes... Samantha had problems with it for several months... until it connected it was a reaction to her heartworm med! We switched brands and she has done fine since. We had to use chicken and rice until her bouts healed... it was not fun!

Poor Toby has not had the best start in life!

I don't like the sound of blood in his faeces...
or is it nothing to worry about?

Rupert is a very handsome hound!

Josie has gotten colitis twice. Our vet said it could come from eating something weird, or stress.

Spencer had bouts of colitis throughout his life. He had food allergies & was on a wheat-free diet, but I think the main cause in his case was anxiety. He was a very nervous guy. I was always trying to anticipate things that may cause him stress & avoid what I could. He was SO fearful of loud noises & would always have a bout of colitis after July 4th. The vet eventually had me start giving him a mild sedative prior to such events. He also had issues whenever his routine was changed, so we lived a very quiet, predictable life.
