Baked Apple Chips-Great Treat Recipe

Hi all. I just thought I would share a recipe with you that I found in the latest issue of 'Woman's Day' Magazine. It is for baked-apple chips. If your dog loves apples as much as mine does, they are sure to like this recipe. It would make for great treats for both people and dogs alike!

Baked Apple Chips

-1 cup water
-1 cup sugar
-2 large apples, not peeled

1. Heat oven to 225 degrees. Set a wired cooling rack on a sheet of foil. Lightly coat rack with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Put water and sugar into a 2-qt saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Boil vigorously 5 minutes until it is a light syrup consistency.

3. Meanwhile, core and quarter apples. Cut each quarter into 10-12 thin slices. Put in a large metal bowl and carefully add boiling hot syrup. Toss apples with tongs until well coated. Remove slices separately and place close together (not overlapping) on prepared rack. Replace foil if needed. Bring up sides of foil and crimp to the edge of rack.

4. Bake 2 1/2 hours. Loosen chips; let cool on rack. (As they cool they become crisp). Store in airtight container.

I forgot the cooking spray and they stuck to the rack slightly, so remember to do that. Also, I did bake them for the full 2 1/2 hours and they turned out great! After I gave my husband one, he responded with "And these are for Charlie???" I told him he could have some too! Enjoy! Let me know how it goes.

My dogs like apples raw and I wouldn't give them anything with sugar added as there is already 'natural' sugar in fruit and most veg so they don't need any more! I'll make these to eat myself so thanks for the recipe!

yes.. I know what you mean. It doesn't really require that much sugar.. most of the syrup is left in the bowl. I just like them because they can be saved and kept for a while. But don't get me wrong, Charlie LOVES raw apples as well.

Enjoy them for yourself! They are very tasty!

One could simply dehydrate the apple slice under low heat or in the sun if you didn't what the added sugar a little lemon juice would prevent browning as well.

Oooh...in the sun...that is such a great idea. My daughter will love making these! Thanks for the recipe. I have some dog treat recipes. I haven't made them yet but I will share when I get some more time.
