Default Basset Hounds are the second costliest dog to keep!!!!

Basset Hounds are the second costliest dog to keep!!!! We have two big girls and no wonder they're costly with what our vets charge us!

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/06/17/pounds-for-fast-hound-115875-22339099/

They are fast, sleek and lovable but the whippet will also race away with their owners' cash. The pet, traditionally raced in the North, are the most expensive dog to look after. Esure Pet Insurance estimated they cost £4,600 a year for vet bills, food and other expenses. Second are Basset Hounds, at £4,400 a year, its survey also revealed.

Esure's Nikki Sellers said: "Today's household pets are treated more like members of the family."

Costliest breeds: 1. Whippet; 2. Basset Hound; 3. Beagle; 4. Chihuahua; 5. Dalmatian; 6. Dachshund; 7. Poodle; 8. Pug; 9. Doberman; 10. Jack Russell.

I find those numbers pretty dubious. That's over $6600 US - per basset. Just for vet bills. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not spending anywhere near that. If I'm having a bad year I might spend that for the whole pack.

Me too. Our most unhealthy dog has a genetic problem that requires 2xday medication and often has allergy problems. He still costs less than $1000 USD/year on average.

The most expensive vet visit I've ever had was around $450 USD for treating multiple skin infections. If a dog is undergoing cancer treatment or another serious medical treatment I can see the numbers getting that high (or worse), but on average I can't see it going over $1500-$2000 per dog.

Yeah I'd say we spent around $2000 the one year we lost our first basset to cancer but aside from that our other two have been very healthy. I wonder where on earth they are getting their numbers from. I spend a couple hundred a year on each dog for their yearly visit, vacinations and heartworm tests. Add then the money we spend on heartworm and flea and tick stuff which is probably another $150 at most and then food which is not bad either. I'd say we are way under the $1000 mark for the both of them per year. Now of course that's not taking into account any of our show entries or classes but they are just talking the average pet owner I imagine.

I wonder where the figures came from and how the heck can a poncy little Chihuahua cost very much to keep? We have had a couple of very costly Bassets that we rehomed and one had Glaucoma and we had to keep seeing a very expensive specialist with him and he had eye drops that cost £47 plus 2 x £26 every month.

Of course my vet never told me that he could have written out a prescription for me to get them at a chemist until my dog had been having them for about 11 months and a man I met when out walking one day, who also had Glaucoma, told me he had exactly the same drops and he got his in Boots and he suggested I ask my vet to write out a private presescription. so after that I was able to get them for £11 and 2 x £14 yet my vet was charging me £99 per month instead of the lesser £39 plus he had a lot of laser treatment - all useless of course!!!

Another Basset we had with Cancer was also put through a couple of ops and a huge amount of treatment and drugs but other than that we've only had spaying to pay for and the odd ear problem.

Edit: My sister (in the south of England) has just had her dog at her vet and he charged her £96 for tablets for a joint problem that she can buy online delivered for £42.30 for exactly the same thing!!!!!

Hmm... I know of a few people with Mastiffs, Newfies and Danes who can tell you that their breeds are far more expensive to care for than our bassets... that includes feeding.
