just wondering, does anyone happen to use the 'pet safe' invisible fence system? I hate to have Hazel on a run because she loves to sniff every acre and I just want her to be safe. The front of my house is close to the road but the backyard is huge. I'm just looking for suggestions....I couldn't handle anything happening to my little lady

The problem with any invisible fence system is two fold. One is it relys solely on training to prevent the dog from crossing the fence. For many dog the simple shock is not a deterant and then there are those that learn to work the system. I have heard of on dog that sit on the edge of the fence line so the warning buzzer keeps going off in the collar depleting the batteries faster than normal when it no longer hears the warning beeps it knows its safe to cross. Do you think the treat of a shock is going to prevent your dog from chasing a squirrel across the boundary line.?

The other problem with them is they do not prevent threats from entering the yard. This can be even more dangerious than the treat of the dog wandering off. A secure physical barrier is the only sure way to prevent possible problems.

Personally, I would never trust the safety of my dogs to one. I've known too many dogs who "figured out" the system and would regularly cross the boundary. Knowing how smart my hounds are, it probably wouldn't take them long.

And as noted above, it does NOT protect your fence from people or animals coming in.

Give me a real fence any day.

But I have heard of people who Love the system.
They probably don't have the incredibly smart bassets that we have

Lightning&Stomps

I've had Invisible Fencing for about 9 years, and I've had almost no problems with it. Stomps was very respectful of the fence--eventually I didn't have to keep his collar on him all the time. Lightning was more likely to test it, but we worked it out very quickly. I trust it implicitly with my dogs. Of course, if the electricity goes out, you have no fence. As to other animals coming on my property, that is a plus for me. We have some neighborhood dogs that come to visit, and I appreciate that, especially now that Lightning is an only dog. Frankly, I had lots more trouble with a "real" fence, people left the gate open and once the dogs somehow got a slat loosened and got out.

that is a good point too....we get regular visits from a chocolate lab Molly which doesn't bother me. They are doggie friends.
And to fence in 2 acres is kind of dumb!
I'm torn!
