New Owner

Hello Everyone!

I new to this forum and a new owner of a hound puppy...
I just want to have some advice from you guys...
I know you have a lot of experience about this field and it would be a great help for me as a newbie...
I just get my puppy yesterday and I was very excited that time...
The first time I saw him...I said to myself I'm gonna make him a good dog!
Any tips and help from you is highly appreciated!

Bassets are wonderful dogs- they are truly 'pack' dogs and want to be with their people and other dogs. Positive training (praise for doing something right rather than punishment for doing something wrong) works best with a basset.

If you have specific questions, there are lots of experienced basset owners on this forum that can help you.

Also, there's a "search" option (see the long black bar below the banner) that you can use to access information on lot's of topics - just type in a phrase, for example "housebreaking", and former posts that contain that word will come up. Some threads will be more informative than others, but browsing through what's there can be really helpful.

Treats, are a great way to train bassets, they thrive on them. But be careful, they are not as dumb as they act and will often train the owner instead of being trained. Our puppy we have had only a week and is 12 weeks old is already trained to come on command, we used treats, and he comes very well, but once he came to the door but didn't come in, and the wife gave him a second treat when he came in. Now he often stops at the door and waits for a second treat and I have to give him a little push to get him in.

Personally I was very persistent on potty training. I would get up about every 2 hrs to let Jessie out to potty. Every time she would go potty I would praise her, then immediately bring her inside and put her to bed. I did this for at least a month along with her going out with my 3+yr old lab mix daily. She learned real quick that the potty area is outside. The key is to be persistent. She now can hold it for 12hrs while I am at work. She just turned a yr old on March 1st. She is an amazing dog.

We definatley were consistent with the potty training, and got her to speak to us when she wants to go out. Also when she was little I socialized her with a lot of animals, cats, big dogs, small dogs, children ...she loves to be in a crowd!
AND KEEP LOTS OF CHEW TOYS!!!! LOTS AND LOTS!!!
And they are very smart dogs....they try to trick you
