Hope you get your girl! I would love to have two or three bassets but we currently have two dogs (GSD and Basset) and that's the limit for us, mostly due to how much it costs to have a dog these days.

yes it is expensive! he has been wanting a little girl for quite a while now and we both fell in love with the breed when we got toby. the girl i have my eye on is a lemon so we would have a tri and a lemon! i have a set of magnetic salt and pepper shakers which are a tri and a lemon basset and they are kissing. it would be perfect to have the actual dogs to match that!

Bassets are so much smarter than most people give them credit for. I don't know why so many people think they are lazy and stupid. Yogi is the smartest dog I have ever known.

if there's treats involved toby will learn anything you ask him to. there's a maltese and a labradoodle in our class with us and toby learned the new commands quicker than the other two!

because they do not know how to communicate with them. A typical basset reaction to stress and therefore punishment is to hunker down ie flat basset. hence the idea that they are stuborn. On top of that they are not very bidable. They lack a strong desire to please the owner. In order for a basset to do something the must believe it is in their best interest to do so. Mommy says down, if i comply i might get a treat, vs Mommy say down she might tell be i'm a good boy. For most basset the second option is no reward at all and those that think this should be the primary motivator for dogs a doomed to fail in trying to to train bassets.

Training methods that require the dog to thing as well basset ussual excel over many breed tradional thought as easy to train, because over the year they were bred to think on their own instead of mindlessly react. [/quote]

I'm hoping he says yes... and if he does, you have to let me know how you got him to do so! I'm still trying to work on my hubby to get another... maybe someday... I know he wants a friend for her, and I do as well, I think it would give me piece of mind knowing she has a buddy!
I guess it's safe to say that bassets are like potato chips... you can't have just one LOL!

I totally agree! I've been trying to convince my husband we need another basset too. I also went to "puppy school" with Flash and he performed beautifully. Only problem is now he refuses to do anything unless you have a treat ready that he can see. I can tell him to lay down 20 times and he'll just look at me, but whip out a treat and he flattens out in 1/2 a second! Now i'm like the crazy dog lady who always has a bag of treats in her purse!
