Hi Everyone,
I am new here and I am hoping that I can find a few answers for my hounds.

I have 2 hounds- Benson will be 9 in March and Daisy just turned 7 on Christmas day.

I have a few questions, but so I can keep my posts in order, my first question is about Benson. I took both hounds for their annual shots about 3 weeks ago and since then, I have noticed that Benson has been shaking. (To be fair- I am correlating the shaking with the date of the shots, but the shaking may have started a few days prior.. I am just not 100% certain) He doesnt seem to be in any pain when he moves, although he seems to be moving a bit slower. When I sit next to him to comfort him, I can almost hear a slight whimper when he exhales. He does not shake when he is sleeping. He is eating/drinking normal and there have not been any bowel changes. He is alert and he still plays and jumps down from the couch to greet everyone at the door etc. He had a quarter sized fat deposit... on his chest area that ruptured and this has been trying to scab and heal for about a year.. it will ooze and then I clean it up and then it tries to heal and then oozes again. It smells terrible and I dont know if it could be infection, but the vet has seen it several times and says not to worry about it... but I dont know what to do about the smell. Could the shaking be from an infection in this wound?? Any help on both of these issues would be awesome. Thanks

In my experience shaking or shivering almost always means pain (unless it's 5 below zero). I'd get him to the vet pronto - and I'd pick a new one if your dog has a smelly wound and your vet is not concerned. Also - fat deposits don't usually rupture. What you're describing is probably a sebaceous cyst. They can heal up fine, but need proper wound care. Let us know how he is, poor boy...

Thanks. I live in Tampa, so I dont think he has been very cold lately. (well- until today maybe!) I might be confused about the fat deposit vs cyst. Benson had one of these that was the size of a baseball on his back and 2 vets told me that it "was fine and not to worry about it". (although it was very big and looked terrible) it did finally rupture one day and what a mess... I had the vet agree to surgically remove it. Both of my hounds have these bumps. My Daisy must have at least 20 in various places. The smelly one on benson, luckily is in a place that he can not scratch or bite, but it just wont heal. I will take him back to the vet about the shivering though. Thanks again.

I would definitely take him to another vet. That is not a good sign that he has a cyst that won't heal for that length of time. I would also be concerned about the trembling as well.
My Yogi has a lot of sebaceous cysts and I have had several of them removed. Most recently a golf ball size one from the side of his neck. That one kept going up and down so I did ask the vet to remove it for the very reason you described, a rupture waiting to happen.
I hope you can get some answers for your boy and post some pictures for us. We love seeing hound pictures!

I'm a surgical nurse and anytime you have smelly discharge coming from a wound we just treat it as an infection. I think your dog could be sick and I think you need to find a new vet. Smelly wounds, whether from a dog or a human are never "okay". Maybe the trembling is a sign of fever.

He is not shaking any more! I am not sure what caused it, but it stopped and he seems ok. He is coughing a little every day which is weird, but everything else seems good!

Good grief, an open, smelly wound, now a cough, and still no vet visit? Poor Benson......
