My wife and I have really been enjoying having Rosco, and we are already thinking to the day when we get another puppy. We would like at most 2 dogs at once, and we aren't going to get another for many years, as I have to finish school and we will all probably be moving then. But I was wondering what kind of dog to get that would get along well with a basset. My wife wants another basset, which I am not against, but I thought that a bulldog with the name Riley would make a great addition. Two short little stumpy-legged dogs would be great - Rosco is going to be jealous enough of a new puppy without it being two feet taller than him as well!

So I was wondering if anyone had experience with what breeds do well with bassets and what to avoid. Any suggestions would be great. Rosco would probably be in the 3-6 year age range at that point.

Thanks!

Perhaps getting a breed that has behavior characteristics similar to those of Basset Hounds.

VB3,

My wife and I just went through the same thing, but in reverse. We had Willy the basset for thirteen and a half years with his Lhasa brother Peanut who just recently passed. We went for six months without a fur friend and decided the mourning period was over. We ended up getting two shih tzu puppies (brother and sister from the same litter). We thought that would do it but the longing for another basset hound was just too strong. Two weeks later we picked up our new addition to the pack, Moses the basset hound. We worried about compatibility between the two breeds but it ended up being a waste of energy. They hit it off immediately. They sleep together, play together, eat together etc... Our shih tzus don't realize they are different from Moses and visa versa. While I think another basset would be great, we're glad we added a little variety to the pack. They are a total hoot to watch together. The tzus are now ten weeks old and Moses is nine weeks old and we look forward to many, many years of enjoyment and companionship from our kids. Best of luck on whatever decision you make.

Well I can tell you after seeing Chili's puppy pictures we are pretty much set on another basset. Now all we have to do is find the strength to wait until Rosco is a bit older.

On a side note, we would love any suggestions for a female basset name that starts with R.
