I take Lollypop (a 15 month old girl) almost every day to a state park in MA. There are many old logging roads and trails everywhere. I never leash her. We usually walk about 4 miles and she has so far never strayed more than a couple of hundred yards. She is always aware of where I am. If she stops to sniff or explore, she will usually come running if I call her or clap my hands. Normally I don't have to do anything as she will always (so far) come running. BTW, I learned the hard way to always carry my leash in case we approach a road or highway.
