Second Opinion on George??

Quick question for the basset experts. Our loyal basset, George, is now 9 months old. Everything seems fine with him except one thing that has been bugging me for a few months. George has a "bone deformation" near his elbow that does not seem normal. He does not favor that leg, but it looks and feels odd. The bump is pure bone when you feel it. It's almost like he has twice the bone growth when you feel the leg versus the other one. I loaded two pictures showing the odd bump, I will post another of the other leg showing no bump. I have had the vet look at it and he seems to think that it is nothing to lose sleep over. Do you think I need a second opinion?

George ids BEWDEFOOL....re bony lump...I have seen some bassets with seriously biffid legs...Prob part of limited gene pool of purebreds...But who am I to know...personally I wouldnt fuss

He just looks like he is slightly bowlegged. more in one leg than the other. If it's not hurting him, there is not too much you can do. My guy is bowlegged on both sides, and he runs (albeit in a slightly odd-sideways way) but isn't in any pain. I've been told the only way to "fix" (not 100%) is surgery, and no one wants to put a dog through that if it isn't a problem. Since your boy will probably still be growing for nearly another year, you may see it get worse over time.

On the brightside, you get to call them elbows, or as my boyfriend prefers "bulldog legs". And people will likely comment that your dog looks very butch and strong walking into a room!

Cooper has a similar condition in both legs - he definitiely struts around like a bulldog. He's about 3 and it's never bothered him a bit.

The dwargism of basset has a tendency to make them a lot less symetrical than other breeds. onless the extra bone growth manafest itself in pain, limping etc it can be ignored. When it comes to basset orthopeadics it is always wise to find a vet that specializes in orthopeadics and a a good knowledge of the unique aspects of basset hounds.
