Here are some pictures of Daisy. I have posted several times about her fur (shedding, dandruff). I think it is changing color too. Right behind her front legs is most noticeable. Can/Do Bassets change their colors? She was all brown and is now getting some black in her fur. She wouldn't change to tri color or anything, would she???

that is strange! Ken was mostly black (with a little brown) when we got him and now he is mostly brown with a little black. My beagle did the same thing... I've never heard of it going from brown to black!

It's not really uncommon for the hounds to shift colors, I've watched my older hound mix gain some black on her ears and tail. Of course, just like us hair color changes and goes grey...

My boy Django went from a deep brown with a dark black saddle to a tan with hardly any back at all. His Face turned really white too, He's the youngest of our 3 hounds but everyone calls him the old basset because his face it white. (he's only 4 and it's been white for years now).

I was curious about this too! Virga is 16 weeks and we've had her since she was 6 weeks. When we got her she was black and white with a line of brown basically dividing the black from the white. Now, she's getting more brown hairs on her butt and her ears are turning from black to brown. It's the oddest thing I think I've ever seen.

Soundtrack

This looks different from the normal changes that one would associate with a maturing pup. Offhand, I would suspect that this is an area that she scratches at frequently? If so the color change is probably a result of scarring/skin damage. Coat in injured areas does occasionally come back in a different colour - I used to have a totally black cat who got a wound on his shoulder and when it healed the fur grew back in white on that spot.

Dandruff in a dog is almost a sure fire sign of "seborrhea" in dogs. This makes them much more prone to yeast and bacterial infections of the skin as well. A yeast infection will turn the skin black I would suspect it could do the the same to the hair but it might be more of a staining than something permenent. I have had a number of dogs with a black saddle which had seaonal varriation that is more noticable in the summer than winter. Again with seasonal coat chages the ligher coat is found in the winter in the northen hemisphere so again not a likely cause of a darkening in the fall/winter. But a have to agree with Mirriam the Darkend area shape lend it self more to an area of trauma via scratching especial tthe hind leg give the natural arc it does no look like a typical basset coat patern if there really is such a thing,

Soundtrack

True, most of the scarring I have seen has been white (Mouse's head was covered with white specks from the various scraps she got into), but I've also seen a couple of cases in dogs I've groomed where the hair grew back darker.
