I'm fostering another basset for the week, and I think I may be allergic to her. I know I am allergic to cats, but I don't think I've ever been with dog that I was allergic to. As a preteen I worked in a small doggie store and when I turned 18 started volunteering at an animal shelter instead. Bogie's hair is very soft and on the short side. The fosters hair is longer, not very soft (feels and looks almost like german shephard hair), almost like straw. Also, when I pet or brush her hair against the grain, a lot of what looks like dandruff flies off of her. I normally am on allergy meds 24/7, however since she's been in the house, they've been driving me nuts, even though I'm on the meds. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of being allergic to some dogs but not others, or if you think giving her a bath may help. I'm tempted to keep this foster, since she doesn't have a home lined up yet, but with how bad my allergies have been around her I think it may be impossible.

It is the dry skin ie {dander} that most people are allergic to you may find you are mildly allergic to dogs but this particular dog has a skincondition that makes your allergies worse. Dogs that do not shed, such as poodles, an numbe of water dogs, some terrier breds and hairless dogs are said to be hypoalergenic. That is they tend not to cause a allergic reaction in people that are normally allergic to dogs. A bath with a dandruff ahampoo , selsun blue. With a minium contact time on the skin of 15 minutes might help.

Dry course hair and dandruff could be a symptom of hypothyrodism. or seborrhea. It is worth having a vet check this out. Getting the dander under control may be all that is need to bring your allergies under control. You need to vacuum riligiously and be sure the vac has a true hepa filter.
