Spencer had his yearly check-up today (I use the term "yearly" with a snicker, considering how often we are at the vet!) Anyway, he had his exam, a nail trim, anal gland expression, blood pressure check (due to being on a medication that has a side effect of raising blood pressure), a blood draw to check on his liver issues he was having a few months back, another blood draw to recheck for allergies (his shots have not been as effective lately), 2 vaccines and a stool check
(loose bowels lately). In addition, I had to get Frontline, a new supply of syringes for allergy shots & a refill on Rimadyl. When we went out to the front desk afterwards, the receptionist asked me how he did. I said ok, but I thought I should probably sit down to hear the grand total for our visit. She added it all up and said "Well, you stayed under $500.00...barely. $499.57! There has to be some job Spencer can do to contribute to his upkeep! Just kidding. I'd do anything for that knucklehead. Other than age related issues like cataracts, slightly diminished hearing and arthritis, he seems to be doing well. We'll get the regular blood test results tomorrow & the allergy test results in 7-10 days.

Hello,

Jasper goes for yearly physical exams and it usually runs about $150-$170 for blood test for Lyme and heartworm, the heartworm pills, anal gland expression and general check over by the vet. He's young, just turned four and we feel lucky that he doesn't have anything chronic that needs to be addressed.

Doesn't that just boil your blood? Vets are so daggone expensive! I take mine on an as needed basis (checkups or if something pops up), but for shots and stuff the local animal shelter does a low cost shot clinic. I've found that helps cut some cost.

Eloise had two rocks removed on Tues., and it 'only' cost $621. Much less expensive to have my own vet do this surgery than it was to have it done at the E-Clinic! I never thought I'd think a $621 vet visit is cheap, but I do now!!!

June 25, 2008 - Bogie's elbow visit was $180.00 for visit, x-rays, and meds.
June 6, 2007 - ACL repair was $493.72
Sept. 9, 2006 - swallowed rock surgery was $579.46
June 6, 2006 - swallowed rock surgery was $746.07
That's not counting regular visits, shots, etc. since we have had Bogie, but it has been worth every penny for our Basset guy. You couldn't ask for a better companion or more loving Basset.

I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one paying these outrageous prices! But, these furry guys & gals are worth it!

On a happy note, the vet called with the regular blood test results - all levels within normal ranges. He was very happy, & so was I. Now we just wait for the allergy test results. Last time we had an allergy check, Spencer was allergic to so many things they said he was borderline to needing 2 vials of serum. They said they could do 2 vials and cover everything he was allergic to or do 1 and just cover what he was most allergic to. I opted to go with one then, but am expecting to have to go to 2 this time. We'll see!

Moe goes tomorrow for his "well-dog" visit, when he'll get all his shots, heartworm and lyme tests, nails clipped, anal glands expressed, and an evaluation of his latest crop of lumps. I 'm expecting a bill of approx $200 and praying for no recommended surgeries this year.

I've lost count what Moe has cost us to date but his three surgeries to remove cysts totaled over $2200. Then there were various burst and/or infected cysts, a serious puncture wound that required stitches, several ear infections, and yearly well-dog visits. And I can't forget his poor condition when we adopted him - kennel cough, worms, evaluation of his deformed leg (and the leg's aches and pains as he was growing, treated with rimadyl and later buffered aspirin), and his neutering.

Moe has been my comfort when everyone expected me to be strong for them but it seemed that no one was there for me. He has been my confidant and my companion as a stay-at-home mom. He has cheered me with his happy enthusiatsic greetings when I came home, he warmed me with his soft cuddly body when I was chilled in the winter, he made me laugh when I thought laughing was the last thing I could do. In short, he is a priceless gift and has been worth every penny and more, to me.

I don't even like to think what Franny's eyes cost me. Easily over $7000 total and I still have a blind dog Oh well, I'd pay twice that to still have him with me. Last month when he had that awful vomiting and diarrhea it cost me $400. Once again, well worth it.
His latest problem is that he's becoming selectively deaf. I can whisper about treats and rides and he could hear me a mile away but trying to call him back to the car after our walk and he can't hear a word I'm saying!!!
