Unfortunately, our newest addition, Winston just isn't working out and we'll be returning him to Basset Rescue shortly.

He is becoming more and more aggressive with our other dog Louie. Ideally, we'd love to keep him and try to retrain him, but we just don't have the time or money to be training another dog right now. We wanted a buddy for Louie to keep him company when we're not home (usually for only a few hours), but Winston is just non-stop and won't leave Louie alone. He's a lovely dog by himself, but when there are other dogs around he doesn't listen and becomes very aggressive. He's even bit my husband and I (not drawing blood - but bad enough). He's always competing for attention and I think he would do very well in a home where he's the only dog. Louie is so stressed out he is huddling in corners and jumping up on furniture to get away from Winston. We just can't put both of them through it much longer. Luckily, there's a line up of people wanting Winston, so I don't feel that bad, but it's still very sad that we couldn't be the forever home for him.

The fact that he bit you and your husband is really troubling, and will pose problems for the rescue you got him from. I'm so sorry to hear this.

I"m sorry to hear this...he's such a handsome boy. Unfortunately with rescues so many have had poor previous lives so you never really know what you're going to get and so it's a gamble (though one I've gotten lucky with 2 times now). Like you said it sounds like he'd be better off as a solo dog. I hope everything turns out well.

That's too bad it did'nt work out. Perhaps you should get a female companion for Louie? Maybe it was too much testosterone for one household. Was Winston nuetered?

We were thinking of a female, and a younger one than Louie so he can do more "teaching" than defending himself. Winston is neutered. We're apprehensive about rescuing another but i'd feel bad about getting a puppy when there are so many dogs that need homes. Our local spca just brought in a truck load of dogs from Louisianna so, we might go check out all the pups there.
We do need a bit of time to rest though. It's like my husband says "it's like breaking up with someone...you don't go out and get a replacement right away"...well at least we never would...lol
thanks for all your support,
Dana

So sorry to hear things are not working out with Winston. It does sound like he would be better off as an only dog but the biting issue is very troublesome. I feel badly for all of you! Maybe in the future you will find a better match.
