In the past couple of days Annie has begun this licking of the bedspread or any type of material she can find such as a throw on our love seat.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be related to or what is causing her to do this? We keep telling her to stop and after about the fifth time she will and then move on. She has never done this before and we are curious if you guys have any suggestions or have experienced the same time of behavior?

Our old dachshund Hansel would lick when he was anxious- I think it relieved stress. We would not acknowledge what he was doing by telling him to stop- instead, we would just distract him by throwing a toy for him to chase, etc.

Anxiety sounds roght... our Dachshund licks her feet just before settling down to really sleep (as opposed to napping). She's a very anxious dog - she has separation anxiety, and also is afraid of loud noises, thundertorms, men, etc...

But there could be other reasons for licking. Moe, our Basset, licks the logs I bring in for the woodstove. I have no idea why...

I have been awakened by Dixie doing that in the middle of the night!! We've never figured it out. NO fleas ...no allergies that anyone can detect. She was just licking her binkie. Or her dog bed or whatever she was sleeping on. Very strange.

My Lily used to do this also. That is the main reason I began sleeping with ear plugs. She may still do it, but I no longer hear it.

Bogie does this, too. He licks his blanket, the carpet, his bed, and the ceramic tile floor. We think it's a way to entertain himself when he's bored. We try to distract him by calling him, throwing a toy, giving him a treat filled Kong, etc.

We did not get Bogie until he was 10 months old, and he spent a lot of kennel time before us. We often think it became a behavior from bordum of just lying in a run in a kennel with nothing to do so licking the concrete became something to do. Bogie is also the rock eater that has had two surgeries for rock blocked intestines.

My Bogie does it too. He seems to enjoy a bit of licking right before he is going to sleep (one of his many pre-sleep activities) or right after he wakes up, but doesn't want to get out of bed. I usually distract him by going over and giving him some petting, and that will usually get him distracted enough to stop.

Ive seen both Harvey & Daisy do this, although not often.
Usually when they've had a treat... think they are just trying to get every last bit even if it's attached to their bed!.

Never been a problem or regular thing though.
