I live in a great small town in the Hamptons and work in a locally owned (21 years) restaurant. A puppy store is opening 2 stores away in a few weeks. PLEASE give me legal, ethical advice as to what I can do get rid of these maggots. I am SO angry! I devoted 12 years of my life to rescue, and 90% of the Bassets I fostered came from pet shops. Links to articles (short would be good so I can hand them out) would be greatly appreciated. I plan to infiltrate the store as a "prospective buyer" to get info, and write letters to the local paper. Any other ideas? Argghhhhh!! Belinda.

Go Belinda go.. don't stop until your voice is heard. Ask others to help and breathe the truth about breeding animals for profit.

Use the small town setting to your advantage. Use one of the same tactics a politician uses--go door to door with a petition that opposes the mill shop and get signatures---- when you have canvased the area take the petition to your city council meeting--or whatever it called in your area. Before you make the meeting check to determine the procedure you must follow to be recognized on the floor to bring in a new matter of business . If the governing body already has guidelines in place that the mill shop is using to their advantage then your action will send the signed, sealed and delivered message that those who elected them do not favor the mill shop in their jurisdiction. Jump up and down before hand with the local newspaper who will provide plenty of coverage because they will be at the council meeting as well...........good luck!

Good advice here. The same tactics have been used in our area, and so far two pet stores have been shut down because of it. There's one store left, and I suspect it'll be gone soon.
Don't give up! It may take a little time, but you'll get 'em in the end . . . .

Can you get the owners of the restaurant to host an animal rescue day in the parking lot? That would draw a lot of attention to unwanted dogs, which of course would shed a bad light on the pet store. The North Shore Animal League is very active--find out if they're willing to help out. You go girl!
