I was reading on another dog forum that some vets are no longer using Frontline products because the ticks and fleas are becoming immune to the product. We have used Frontline Plus for years and it has always seemed to work well for us. We only use it for about six to eight months out of the year depending on the weather. So I was just wondering if anyone is having a problem with this product not working? I plan on asking the vet about it on the next visit. We also use Interceptor for heartworm all year round and last year our vet was telling us that the dogs should be tested every year because they are finding that the pills are not working as well as they did in the past. I am just wondering if it is really that the insects are becoming immune to the products or if it is a problem of owner compliance?

This is my experience:
Advantix repels ticks so that they don't stay on the dog- the only problem is that Murray is horribly allergic to it- the first year he was on it was fine- the first time I put it on him after a winter break, he had a terrible reaction- ended up having to get a shot of cortisone to stop his misery. I've talked to other dog owners whose dogs reacted this way to this product. So we went back to Frontline. On Frontline, the ticks walk around on him for awhile, but don't attach. This is a problem because they can hitch a ride home on him and drop off in our yard! Recently our vet stopped carrying Frontline and started offering a new product for sale at his clinic. When I asked him why, he said it works better that Frontline- but because of Murrays bad reaction to Advantix, he recommended that we stick with Frontline. We live in a Lyme state- Murray and I both tested positive for Lyme 3 years ago, when I developed a bullseye rash right before Christmas- even though it was December, there were loads of ticks active out on the State Game Lands where I was walking him- so now, I don't take him out in the woods unless there's snow on the ground. This has been a big problem for me because I miss going out in the fields around here. I'll be interested in hearing what others have to say. |

The vet only stocks the Frontline Products. They don't feel that Advantix works very well. I used that one before I changed vets and it did seem to work just fine.
Thanks for the information, Mikey T. I am still going to check with the vet about the Frontline Products but like I said we have not been having any problems with it. I was just curious to know if anyone else was having a problem. |

Does anyone else experience this with Frontline? When I had him on Advantix, I didn't notice this happening, so it seems that Yogi's Mom's vet and I have had opposite experiences-- this is really an issue for me because we have such heavy tick populations in our area, and the areas I walk him in now are really limited because of this. Mike, thanks for all the data, that's really interesting- it sounds like Sargeants Silver Flea and Tick Squeezon with cyphenothrin gives the best tick protection- I never heard of this product! |

Sargeants is carried at Walmart and it WORKS! I ususally use Sargeants, Zodiac, or Bio-spot. Bio-spot is one of the best and it is compared strongly against Frontline and K-9 Advantix. All of the 3 I've mentioned have formulas that kills fleas, flea eggs, mosquitoes, and Ticks. |

Ruby is allergic to Advantix too.
She's only been on Frontline Plus for years with good success. Janice
