My sweet basset boy Jake... now almost 4 years old... has suddenly started violently attacking our little Indiana- a pound puppy we have had for more than 2 years. It started two days ago anad we aren't sure what set it off... We thin Jake may be feeling protective of one of the other dogs and is just trying to put Indy in his place... but it is very scary. Yesterday I was too far from water so I threw the laundry basket at them. Jake has nipped Indy's ear hard enough to make it bleed... but didn't tear it thank goodness! Any thoughts, suggestions? What can I do to intervene and hopefully nip this behavior in the bud?

Thumbs up

Do you have any intact dogs or bitches, and could an intact bitch be coming in season, triggering fights between your dogs?

Are Jake and Indy neutered? Betsy's right, having intact dogs living under the same roof can cause difficulties. What breed is Indy?

How about a vet check? I've always thought sudden changes in behavior should be checked out by a vet first to rule out any physical causes-

I agree with the above posts-sudden changes in behavior always warrant a trip to the vet to rule out something medical.

Unless you've had a lot of training experience I'd suggest getting in touch with a trainer ASAP to nip this problem before it escalates. If you don't know any trainers in your area you might want to email a basset hound breeder that may know of someone who has experience with bassets. Here are some BHCA members in Texas

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry- Ive been out of town for a funeral and am just getting back.. Jake was bad for 2 days... and then stopped. We are still real cautious about leaving him with Indy because we don't know what set him off in the first place. Indy is neutered (Jake is not) and they have been best buds for more than 2 years Our vet said to watch and bring him in if worried... but by then he had quit attacking Indy so we are just watching for now.

Barb's advice is great, and you should seriously consider it. That -- and have Jake neutered!
