We got home tonight around 5:30. His surgery went well. The doctor removed a Naso-Lacrimal Cyst from his right eye. It was a fluid filled cyst that didn't need to be sent out for biopsy!! That was a relief. No idea why he got this?? He is ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE with that darn E collar on. He is so low to the ground he can barely walk without it digging into the grass or hitting the ground. The Vet Tech even commented what a difficult time he would have since he is a "Low Rider" as she put it!! My boy looks so sad. He is confined to a area that we gated off with an X pen. His bed & pillow are in there with him. Stickers is NOT allowed anywhere near him for fear she will poke his eye with her nose or lick his eye, which I'm sure she would attempt to do both! She is crying outside the Xpen for him!! What a LONG 10 days this will be!

In addition to this, my good friend is having surgery Thursday and her Husband is out of town. I will take her for surgery and stay with her till Saturday morning to take care of her!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need another Vacation!

I snapped these photos of Rusty just now!

Poor Guy...such a sad little face. Hope he's feeling better soon.

He has to wear it for 10 days :( The Opthamologist said the inflatable tube collar will NOT work for eye surgery. That he has seen dogs get at the eye with that on??? I just can't take that chance. He slept well last night, ate breakfast and has his meds so that's good. The other hard thing is keeping him confined in the x pen so Stickers can't get at it. She looks sad too :( :(

I guess he'd still be able to get at it by pawing at it with the front feet or scratching with the back feet with any other type of collar?

I'm sure he will get himself adjusted to it soon, but maybe not being separated from Stickers. Is she staying close by?

Hope he's feeling better today.

Maybe you could get a little creative with the collar and fix it up as a scary Halloween costume complete with a real scar! :D

Ouch! That looks nasty -- no wonder Rusty looks so sad.

E-collars are really tough for bassets, but sometimes we have no choice. I've had to use them a few times, and I'd leave them on when the dog was crated, take them off when walking on lead. That way, the dog had freedom of movement when they needed it most, and I was right with them to make sure the incision was left alone. Maybe you could do something similar for your boy.....

Yeah! What a nasty looking incision! I hope it doesn't leave a permanent scar to mar that otherwise perfect face. I'm kidding--He'd be just as beautiful if he had a big horn growing out of the top of his head. Good luck these next 10 days. Just last night I was watching a show on Animal Planet where dog had surgery on his face, and they said the e-collar was the only choice because with anything else a dog can scratch their face. Hang in there Rusty!
