Since I am new to the breed, this is something I have found very interesting...recently I have met 6 bassets, owned by different people, and their bassets all have a courser, thick coat, while on the other hand, my basset has a shiney, very slick and smooth coat...they have all been surprised when they have pet him, and many have asked me if he's just had a bath because of his shine...just curious as to how many have thick coats and how many have the thinner coats...mine doesn't shed much at all...one of them asked me what I was feeding him because his coat is so nice...(I might add, that none of these people know each other to my knowledge, I met them on different days at different places).
I have mastiffs, so I know that it is common for their coats to be different too, but I seem to be the "odd man out" here!
I have two bassets from different breeders with very different coats. Maxwell has a longer, thicker & fluffier coat that sheds like crazy. Sadie has a shorter, thinner coat that is very shiny looking and sheds but nothing compared to Maxwell.
Moe has a mildly coarse coat. My friend's dogs all have different coats - Lulu's is longish and somewhat coarse, Ollie's is shorter and smooth, Zelda's is satiny-soft and a real treat to touch. I could pet Zelda literally for HOURS...
They're all different - Sadie's coat was very thick & coarser than Spencer's, who has a very thin, fine, soft & shiny coat. My brother calls him "Mr. Softy."
Ruby is very soft and has shiny fur but she sheds like mad all the time.
When we've gone to basset shows, we've met some with coarse almost pig bristle hair. YUK!
I think Ruby's shine is from her diet. Those omega oils in her food.
