I was just wondering if/when any of you have put you're bassets on a diet to loose a few lbs how long does it usually take to shift?

I just wondered as Snoopy was told to loose weight by our vet and we were told she was on a too high fat diet as we feed her 100% mince meat with her biscuit (we drain all the fat of once cooked and wash it in water to get anymore excess fat off). we've halfed her meals. after four weeks i took her to the vets, she lost 1lb in four weeks. i took her last week after another two weeks cutting back and she stayed the exact same weight!
i didnt actually see the vet when we went we just walked in, jumped on the scales and walked back out - the prices in the UK are extreem - $40 for ten mins of the vets time!

i'm just wondering if its difficult for them to loose weight or shall we try her on a different diet?

oh, i've got some FAB pictures of her in the countryside on my mobile phone camera - just need to figure out how to upload it on the computer and i'll post them soon!

I put Rusty on a diet several months ago. He was 54.5 pounds. He was not overweight but it was getting difficult to see his waist when standing over him. You can see he is slimmer in the second photo at the waistline. I cut his food portion back . ALSO, I continued to exercise him with walks daily totaling about 3 miles. That really helped. Now he is 50 pounds, perfect I'd say. I wouldn't really be concerned about the number so much. Watch his figure and exercise him. You will see when his body starts to change. I guess if you didn't exercise him it would be a slower process???

It took FOREVER (read 6 months) for my little man Stewie to loose some extra pounds he put on after having surgery on his paw. I also ended up cutting his meals by 50% (didn't start at 50%, but we slowly ended up there) and really cutting back on the treats!!

Try cutting back the meat, and adding canned no salt green beans or canned pumpkin - these will bulk out the diet without adding many calories.

hi l have gotten sam back on senior food i found one that has chicken and no wheat . he is allergic to wheat.how do i tell what he is suppose to weight? he is pretty long! he is 75 lb now i think 60 would be good. he was overweight when i got him.

1. Just because you cut the rations in 1/2 does not mean the dog is still not being over fed, Keep in mind for the majority of bassets they are never really sated untill their feet can no longer touch the ground because their belly is so big. Just because the dog is hungry does not mean it need to be fed

2. Diet goes hand and hand with exercise doing only one certainly reduces results.

3. it is not fat not sugar or protein that cause a dog to get fat or anyone else for that matter it is calories. reduce calories, FWIW my active dogs in the winter when the are less active get 1 3/4 of 435 kca/cup dog food per day that around 800 a day upto 950 when they are highly active. I think you will find she is still being fed too much

4. I personnal avoid senior and lite dog food because the majority of them reduce the fact level and protein levels to very low level which given what we now no about dog nutrition is not the best for them.
Fat is a bet energy supply for dog than charbohydrates as dogs get older the us protein less effieciently so the general need higher protein levels not lower unless thety are in the throws of kidney failure. It was once thought heigh protein diets led to kidney failure but recently that assumption has been proven false.

5. My dogs would easily lose 1 -2 lbs in a week by cutting back 1/2 cup a day on their ration.

Mr. Runcible lost weight fairly quick when I put him on a diet.
Well, it was more that I stated to give him the right amount of
food and not a diet at all. That and some walks was all that it
took and he was perfect again after some weeks. Now, I've
changed his food so I've had to adjust the amount once again,
because he started to gain weight.

And as someone here stated above, dog wil generally still want
more food after being fed the proper amount.
